70k a week is still bit too much for my liking...

Bitter German tbh, don't like to see the english bulldog spirit still going strong

I think it's a good transfer as Barton is better what we have in central midfield currently. But I'd liked to see the wage structure lowered though.

i'm a bit indifferent to this news tbh. not a bad player but not one to get the pulse racing either. plus he seems like a complete twat off the field.

hope he isn't as big a let down as parker turned out to be. english players with big reputations on big wages often are.

To be honest he seems like lad who's keen on his football the club and the fans playing money to see players giving 100%.

He just seems to have a bad temper.

He is a complete headcase but he does have great desire and a will to win, not a bad player either.

Was pretty much against the signing due to the prospect of him going on a rampage through the club and murdering half the squad but he gets a new slate and will be judged on what he does for Newcastle.

Joey Barton's predictable exit from Manchester City is almost complete with the England international set for a move to Sam Allardyce's new-look Newcastle.

Once again this presents the opportunity for an Opta Audit to see what Barton will add to the Magpies' midfield.

Newcastle failed to score in 17 of their 38 league games in 2006-07, their worst performance in Premiership history, so goals from Barton would certainly be welcome, and he scored as many as the main Newcastle central midfielders last season all by himself.

Player Goals

Joey Barton 6

Scott Parker 3

Belozoglu Emre 2

Nicky Butt 1

And while Allardyce will be keen to see his midfield protect the often-porous Newcastle defence, Barton's ability to get forward and shoot on sight will make him a different proposition to the likes of the now-departed Scott Parker.

Player Shots On Target

Joey Barton 29

Nicky Butt 2

Scott Parker 15

Belozoglu Emre 6

Furthermore, Emre's total of just six shots on target all season was an extremely poor return from the Turk. Creatively Barton also outshone the Newcastle men last season, creating four goals for low-scoring Manchester City and creating 69 other goalscoring chances. Parker came nowhere near these totals.

Player Goal Assists Key Passes

Joey Barton 4 69

Nicky Butt 2 10

Scott Parker 1 17

Belozoglu Emre 2 36

But if there was no downside to Joey Barton then other, perhaps bigger, clubs would surely be rivalling Newcastle for his signature, yet they are not.

Barton's weakness seems to be a disciplinary one, both off the field and on it, and while none of Newcastle's central midfielders saw red in the last campaign, Barton was sent off against Sam Allardyce's Bolton and was booked on a further 10 occasions.

Player Yellow Cards Red Cards

Joey Barton 10 1

Nicky Butt 5 0

Scott Parker 9 0

Belozoglu Emre 6 0

Nonetheless, if his new manager can tame Barton's wild ways, then he could quickly become a redeemed man in the cauldron of north-east football.

Nice arse too. This'll raise our standing no end with the scally-lovers over on famousmales.net, which is practically akin to a marketing partnership with a Chinese feeder club in the grand scheme of things.

Pleased with the signing. Sounds like we're still paying daft wages mind.

Tbh I think that's just the way is going. Jamie Carragher is now on £80,000 a week at Liverpool. If we want to be up near the top of the table then to get the players we want we're gonna have start shelling out too. Our problem is we've been paying these kind of wages to underachieving wasters like Dyer and Luque.

According to The Sun he's on £45,000-a-week.

Barton will spark Toon spree

JOEY BARTON will today become Sam Allardyce’s first Newcastle signing.

The midfielder, 24, had a medical yesterday after putting the finishing touches to his £5.5million move from Manchester City.

West Ham and Middlesbrough were also interested but Barton agreed a bumper five-year £45,000-a-week deal with the Toon.

Newcastle — as SunSport revealed on Monday — added a clause in the deal to protect the club if Barton is charged by police and jailed over his bust-up with City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Barton is still on bail pending investigations into the incident last month.

His agent Willie McKay said last night: “The move is very close. Joey has agreed terms and passed his medical.

"Now we are waiting for the paperwork to be finished.”

Boro striker Mark Viduka, 31, is next on boss Allardyce’s hitlist.

Quite happy that its only taken us two weeks or so to sort out buying a player. I think he will be a good player for us football wise.
