Smooth Operator 10
Is it the done thing to go halves with your neighbours when putting up a new fence? The neighbours to the right of me are wanting to replace the old knackered fence that is technically their border. Ours being the hedge on the other side. So they want to replace it asap and have asked us to go half, now our gardens are massive and it's gonna cost at least 800 quid all told to get it done and I've got a thousand things I'd rather spend 400 snots on! Anyway wor lass seems to think it's the done thing to go halves plus it means we have a say in what is put up. Still rather let them pay for the thing tbh!! peasepud 59
I believe that in the case of fences then the owner is the one on which side the posts lie. This would make it their fence and their problem however by going halves then logically you get a say on what type it is, how high etc. Make him pay and next thing you know your garden will look like Guantanemo Bay. Regardless though, my arguments are a waste of time, if your lass says you should pay then you may as well just save the inevitable and get your hand in your pocket now. Well from what little bit has already been done the posts are on our side! And the fence on the other side of their garden the posts aren't on their side either - so they are borderless?!? Matt 0
We've always gone halfers with one lot and re-fenced the whole side with something that doesn't blow down half a year. Same with the bloke behind, he actually came round and offered to pay some when we put some new panels in. The other lot are miserable gets and say it's ours to fix. Twats. Greg 6
It will be in the title deeds saying if one side has responsibility or not of it is is classed as a party wall. There is a whole big fucking act of parliament on party walls that I have not read. If the deeds say nothing then in the case of fences with posts or struts on one side, the law presumes that the owner on that side owns and is responsible for repairing the fence. ewerk 31677
Tell them to fuck off. If they're approaching you about it then they're obviously going to do it anyway and just want you to pay for half. Let them sort it out and you can enjoy the benefits of it for free.

Rob W 0
normally they willinsist on paying as its their fence - depends on how well you get on withtem - I'd maybe offer a "contribution" unless they are willing to cede joint control

You'd basically be taking on a liability with all the attendant obligations? I think Greg's answer is comprehensive. Apart from it omits any reference to sending a snap of his cock. Answer: No you can't, because all of Rob's neighbours are High Court Judge, Consultant Surgeons in the Diplomatic Corps on Secondment to the UN.
