THE tug-of-war for Newcastle may have been sparked by a tug-of-cash feud between deputy chairman Douglas Hall and his ex-wife Tonya.

Hall and his father, Sir John, have sold the family’s 41 per cent stake in the club to billionaire sports entrepreneur Mike Ashley.

A source told the Daily Express: “Tonya has to be paid off and that has just been sorted out in the last week

or two.

“To be blunt, Douglas needs the money.”

Sir John said: “We had probably run out of ideas a bit, but I am sure he [Ashley] will take Newcastle to where we want to be.”

Ashley has been invited to “an early meeting” with the Newcastle board next week. (Daily Express)
