A man is thought to have died when a van carrying welding equipment exploded in a County Durham market town.

Windows in shops and homes were left shattered and wreckage was strewn across the town centre of Wolsingham, near Bishop Auckland, in County Durham.

Houses near the scene were evacuated after the blast, which happened at 0700 BST on Saturday.

The explosion happened after the driver stopped the van, which was carrying oxy-acetylene cylinders, near shops.

BBC Radio Cleveland's Matthew Barraclough, who is at the scene, said: "There was a very large explosion indeed. It woke up pretty much everyone in the town at the same time.

"People who live in the market square and the homes surrounding that have been evacuated. One woman I spoke to said she was not going to be allowed back into her house for 24 hours.

"We don't know if any buildings have been damaged structurally but that's one of the factors the emergency services are taking into consideration."

No-one else is thought to have been hurt in the explosion, on the A689.

Sounds like the cylinder's might have exploded, ouch !

Reminds me of an occasion when someone brought their car into our workshop on the sly on a Friday night and did some welding on the sill's of the car for his MOT, some one asked him when he'd had his window's tinted, he said they aren't !

He then climbed from under the car to see the windows all black, he'd managed to ignite the carpets whilst welding underneath and the interior of the car was on fire !

The car was quickly pushed outside and the fire brigade called out, blamed it on the local chav's in the end.

  • 11 months later...

Odd to bring this one back up but I've just had an old school mate add me to Facebook. We've been chatting on there and I've found out that she was widowed when she was 21 weeks pregnant with their first child.

The whole story she told was eerily familiar and when I did a search on here - up cropped this story. Yep, it was her hubby in that van. :)

Amazing how small this world can be. The good news is her daughter is now 7 months old, doing well and giving her Mam something to live for.

Fucking awful turn of events though.
