The Newcastle Chronicle reports that Allardyce is lining up a £5million bid for the left-back, who was one of Wigan's better performers in a season that saw them avoid relegation on the final day.

The 22-year-old has gained 11 caps for the England under-21s side, but according to the Chronicle he feels he will not progress into Steve McClaren's full international squad unless he moves to a bigger club.

In addition, Baines was known to have had an excellent relationship with former Latics boss Paul Jewell, so a departure now seems more likely.

Businessman Steve Ashley recently purchased a 41% stake in Newcastle, and if his takeover of the club goes through then Allardyce could have spending power to match the top four clubs in the Premiership.

Baines is being monitored by Manchester United, Everton, Arsenal and Tottenham, but given Allardyce's first task is to revamp and shore up a porous Newcastle defence, he is likely to be guaranteed a starting place at St James' Park.

I'd be happy with either, they're both good players. Also, any left-back in the league who can be arsed to actually want to play football for us would be an improvement on Babayaro.

buy him, he cannot be as bad as the current crop anyway

this seems to be the the main requirement to signing new defenders....can't be as shite as what's there already

Eh? :D

Reports that the buyer was Mike Ashley are wide of the mark.

i think that has to be the basic requirement from now on.

success breeds success, if we go on to do well this season we could attract a higher level of player no problem instead of the "BIG NAME" buys that FFS used to love
