Allardyce back in bung probe spotlight

The furore over the failure to deduct points from West Ham has left the future of the Quest transfer bungs inquiry in limbo.

But the hiatus could allow investigators time to reinterview new Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce about his time at Bolton.

It had been expected that Quest’s update delivered 10 days ago would be their last, with the Premier League board keen to draw a line under a probe which has lasted over a year and cost more than £1million.

But the West Ham case has so dominated the agenda that League chief executive Richard Scudamore is not thought to have had the chance to read the report thoroughly.

It is unlikely any decision will be made before the League annual meeting on May 31 and June 1.

So Quest have in effect been given at least another month to try to get to the bottom of 17 transfers which they had been unable to sign off, which are believed to include deals which took Tal Ben Haim and Blessing Kaku to Bolton.

As a result of what unlicensed Israeli agent David Abou told Quest, they want to speak to Allardyce again about the transfers, in which his son, Craig, received secret payments.

The FA are also said to be keen to talk to Allardyce about the transfer of Idan Tal to Bolton last year, a deal which falls outside the remit of the Quest inquiry.

Allardyce’s appointment at Newcastle means he is once more obliged to cooperate with the inquiry.

MY YEAR OF HELL

By Ray Ryan

SAM ALLARDYCE last night insisted the stress he went through over bung allegations will help him cope with the pressures at Newcastle.

The new Toon boss is acutely aware the job at St James' Park is one of the most demanding in football.

Big names like Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit, Sir Bobby Robson and Graeme Souness have been unable to deliver the success Tyneside craves.

Innocent

But after clearing his name to the Quest Inquiry into transfer bungs, Allardyce can finally look forward to the future.

He said: "I've had a difficult time. The past few months have been hugely stressful.

"I was always guilty until proven innocent. That's not supposed to be the case in this country but it certainly was for me. I've come through all that and I've got nothing to hide. It's over and done with. I never appeared on the Panorama programme. I hadn't done anything wrong. I wasn't caught on camera, was never caught making any allegations or doing anything wrong.

"Quest viewed everything they needed to view. They cleared me, so that's it.

"It certainly didn't come into the discussions when we were talking over the Newcastle job."

But Big Sam says having faced those problems will enable him to cope with the demands of the Geordie fans.

He said: "There is more pressure at this club because it hasn't had the success it thinks it deserves. That brings the pressure almost immediately on me to bring instant success. I'm not sure I can do that. I hope I can.

"I'm trying to make sure I build something that is successful in the long term."

But he also revealed he would NOT have taken the Newcastle job had Bolton qualified for the Champions League this season.

Allardyce said: "We were within a whisker. To come that close with a club like Bolton was a miracle, but it was a bridge too far.

"To finish in Europe two years out of three was very satisfying.

"Newcastle's starting point is to achieve regular European football or win one of the cup competitions.

"We may not be able to grow as quickly as I'd like. But I'm trying my hardest to get the right people in the right places and get results quickly.

"I've got to do that to complete the job, particularly at St James'.

Resources

"Coming to Newcastle gives me a better chance of working on a more level playing field than I ever could at Bolton.

"The club supported me and gave me as much as they possibly could. But that was always limited.

"The resources here are far greater. It's a more level playing field with the big boys.

"My success at Bolton means I know I'm very good at what I do. What happened over the last year has made me stronger as a manager."
