Ally 0
Never been to France before so not a clue how the Tunnel works, but my girlfriend and I are going on a bit of a road trip in a couple of weeks. Whats the craic with it? Can we just turn up in the car and pay, similar to how you do at the Tyne Tunnel or do you have to book tickets? Is it expensive? TheInspiration 1
Is it the Eurostar you're going via, or are you going in the train that takes the cars in it? For the Eurostar I'm pretty sure you have to book in advance - don't think it's too expensive though.

GeordieMessiah 2
The only way to get your car through the Channel Tunnel is on a train, Ally. http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcP3Main/ukcPassengers/
Rob W 0
You drive to near Folkestone for the car train thru to calais - I think you have to book these days but that booking might be half an hour before hand in the middle of the night "No time to book? Eurotunnel Check-inIf you don't have time to pre-book, we may be able to fit you in on the next available shuttle subject to availability. You can pay for your crossing on the day, in pounds by cash, credit card or with a cheque. However, if you can book before the day of travel, either online or via our Contact Centre, you will benefit from cost savings (excludes FlexiPlus fares)." The other way is passengers only Eurostar from Waterloo or Ashford in Kent to Calais, Lille, Paris, Eurodisney, Avignon or Brussels http://www.eurostar.com I use it quite a bit - http://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcp3main
Super_Steve_Howey 0
You actually thought you could drive through? Classic If you're not in any hurry I'd take the ferry, the 'Le Shuttle', as the car carrying train is called, is literally that. You drive onto the train and sit in your car or walk around it. Boring as fuck. The terminal at Folkestone is shite too. Pretty sure the ferry companies are pissing all over it fares wise aswell.

The Lærdal Tunnel in Norway from Lærdal to Aurland is the world's longest road tunnel, intended for cars and similar vehicles, at 24.5 km (15.2 miles). Not far off. Half the distance = not far off???? plus, I think you'll find that is actually 4 tunnels connected by massive chambers

If you re-read Ally's post he never actually claims that you drive through it, he asks if you can pay when you arrive in the same way you do when you want to use the Tyne Tunnel or whether you have to book in advance. Ally 0
Aye pipe down you idiot. As highlighted, I never presumed you could just drive through a tunnel. I'll look into it though, thanks for the helpful replies (ie not SSH).

Kid Dynamite 7192
We once put our car on a train to get from one end of france to the other. Took the same amount of time, cost twice as much and the cabin was like something out of a horror film. mever again
Rob W 0
aye but you didn'y have to drive across the whole of France did you? A few years back we drove down to the Atlantic Coast on the Saturday of the BIG WEEKEND when they all go on holiday - we got to Paris around 12:00 and then realised we were following one of the greatest mass migrations since Gengiz Khan went walkabout - cars broken down by the roadside, every service station stripped of EVERYTHING and scenes on arrival that looked like Dunkirk May 1940.............................. or Shermans March through Georgia
