sweetleftpeg 0
1990 Sunderland (h) 0-2 (0-1) First Division Gates, Gabbiadini 32,216 Playoff 2nd Leg. Just about the only game either of the NUFC.com authors can remember leaving early - the pathetic pitch invasion hastening both our (separate) exits from the ground. One unlucky student-type in the Bacchus pub who chose an inopportune time to ask the score was later treated in the RVI for a burst eardrum... 17 years on and we've just completed another Premiership and European campaign, having been to a pair of proper Wembley finals and just missed out on the UEFA Cup Final a couple of times. International players far and wide have come and gone, and we've twice earned a reputation as the Entertainers of the Premiership. A remarkable turnaround from being turned over by a bunch of clowns on a wet night in an antiquated stadium, when we looked like the ultimate set of puddings, on a one way ticket to nowhere. Worth recalling the team Jim Smith put on the park that night: Burridge, Stimson, Bradshaw, Aitken Anderson, Scott, Askew, Brock, Quinn, McGhee, Kristensen. Subs: Dillon, O'Brien. I also left early like, well, dragged out by my old man. Was up the top of the Milburn at the Leazes End, faffa decided that if it was going to kick off then it was best to get his ten year old as far from the ground as possible. I was crying like a baby as well, not through fear, but from being truly gutted. Probably my lowest point as a fan, even the relegation season the year before hadn't been as heartwrenching. To think of the rollercoaster we've had since then eh.
Renton 22541
To be pedantic, I don't see how we have nearly reached a UEFA cup final twice.
Craig 6703
Aye, I left early too - also on dad's advice! I was in the East Paddock and the old bill literally threw one bloke from the pitch back into where we were sat. All I remember was "c'mon, we're leaving, my car's parked far too near the ground with this lot kicking off!" Shite night, definitely the worst I can remember and I agree SLP, much worse than the night West Ham beat us to relegate us.
