Shearer - Owen is staying at Newcastle United

Michael Owen will still be a Newcastle player next season, according to his former team-mate Alan Shearer.

Asked on BBC One's Inside Sport programme if striker Owen would still be at Newcastle for the start of the next campaign, Shearer said: "Yes."

He added that Owen feels guilty about the knee injury that kept him out for much of last season and is "frustrated" about reports that he wants to move on.

"He wants to get back playing and scoring goals for Newcastle," he added.

Injuries have limited Owen to just 14 games for the Magpies since his £17m move from Real Madrid in 2005.

Reports have suggested he has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for as little as £9m - with speculation linking to a move to one of the big four clubs in England.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has called for Owen to show some loyalty to the north-east club.

The criticism that has always been aimed at Newcastle is the number of goals they concede, so I would imagine defenders are the top priority

And Shearer, who was instrumental in Owen deciding to join Newcastle in 2005, feels Owen just wants to get back to playing games for the club.

He added: "Michael is probably slightly frustrated because he has a contract with Newcastle and he feels if every time he has to come out and say something about speculation he would be in the newspapers every day trying to deny things.

"It's a different story if Manchester United are linked with Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov and Liverpool are linked with players - and you don't see those players coming out and saying: 'Yes, that's true' or, 'That's not true'."

Owen, who was stretchered off with mild concussion in Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Watford on the final day of the season, suffered the knee ligament injury playing for England in the 2006 World Cup.

It came not long after he had returned to fitness following another long absence, with a broken foot.

"I don't think anyone felt as much guilt as he did when he went down injured that day," said Shearer.

Former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce has been widely tipped to become Newcastle manager following Glenn Roeder's resignation on 6 May.

Shearer commented: "It's a huge job and there have been so many managers - I think I went through five or six in the 10 years I was there.

"There are a lot of personalities there that need sorting out. I think a lot of players have gone stale.

"Sam is an expert at getting the best out of players. I hope dearly he goes up there and wins a trophy. It is such a huge club and they are starved of success.

"One thing we can guarantee is he will get money to spend. I think it's defenders we need more than anything.

"The criticism that has always been aimed at Newcastle is the number of goals they concede, so I would imagine defenders are his top priority."

I can see where Al's coming from but an annoucement from Owen to finally lay these clauses to rest would be the best thing to dispell the rumours. Still, if Big Al says Owen's staying then he's staying

He's right of course, Owen shouldnt have to keep coming out replying to tabloids. Though personally I would like to hear him say "For Fucks sake how many times do I have to tell you people? As far as Im concerned Im not leaving Newcastle!".

Never happen like

he'll come out with the same cliche ridden press release that every player makes and it will be derided and dismissed as such as soon as it's made.

it's a no win situation tbh, even during next season there'll be rumours abound that he's off to Man U in the December window

I had to laugh when on MOTD Shearer blamed injuries for our shit season

Look at our number of hours lost this season compared to the rest, we've had a very bad year (worse than normal for us and we're usually right up there).

Whatever the other failing of this season, injury has played a big old role.

Its the same thing every year

Henry to Barcelona

Lampard off

Gerard Off

Rooney/Ronaldo Off

Owen off

Papers like to make it up,

Owen will be in a black white shirt next season

We played best when we had the most injuries. That's a fact that reflects very badly on Roeder.

Bollocks. We played better when we DIDN'T have a full squad to choose from. Often our best performances were the ones where 'the team picked itself', so to speak.

I wonder how long this escape clause is valid for? I was going to say that only an idiot would allow such a clause to continue beyond one transfer window but then only an idiot would have allowed the clause in the first place!

It's the lengh of Owen's contract that's of concern to me. Assuming he won't renew, we'll have to sell him soon. And can we accomodate him and Martins in the same team? Not on the evidence so far.

I'm not sure we played "best" with the most injuries at all, we did win some crucial games when down to the bare bones, but that's not necessarily the same thing at all.

Again I think that is bollocks tbh, given that we hardly had anything remotely like a full squad for any games of the season and often had players coming back from a long term injury before being injured again.

Although some of Roeders decisions were questionable when he had the choice.

When Steve Carr is fit, Steve Carr plays. Therefore injuries have been beneficial to our performances this season.

Aye that is one of the questionable decisions, although only over Nobby really at LB Carr might have been a least worse (or some very bad options).

But people saying that having 3-4 times the average injuries (of other teams) this season has no effect are barmy.

Especially with key players, as I've said before take Ronaldo out of the Man U team for 2 periods of 2 months this season and no way would Man U have won the league.

Yeah this thought has occurred to me too. If he doesn't leave now we will have to show something special to get him to sign a new contract or next summer he will have to go in order for us to get anything back (and it won't be £9m) on him.

I think the only injury that has really mattered has been the big one - Owen. Not only is he far and away our best player, the area where we've been most lacking is scoring goals. This season we've been a one man team, playing without that one man!

So you're saying having Given out for as long as we have wasn't an issue?

Or Emre?

Or Parker?

Or Duff?

Or Zoggy?

Or even (god help us) Ameobi?

Or any of the others that have been out?

Owen has been the biggest single miss, without a doubt, but it's not just being his big and long injury, but a lot of medium and small injuries too, especially repeating ones, which help do for this season.

If any manager can get us down to the average number of hours lost to injury that in an of itself will be a big boost to the team.

I think he'll stay like although I'd like to see us get some money for him, even at a loss, as he'll be worth next to nowt soon and I doubt he'll renew his contract, after all he did the dirty on a club he'd been at since he was a bairn, a club where he won trophies at. He won't think twice about doing the same here at Newcastle in my opinion if next season is no different.

That said, it is up to us to keep him if that is what we want and the only way to do that is to achieve success on the pitch and being the player he is, he'll be a key factor in whether that happens or not.

/best scenario
