Monte Carlo or bust

Newcastle United have sent a delegation to Monte Carlo as they prepare to tie up the appointment of Sam Allardyce as their new manager.

The word is that United last night met top European agent Mike Morris, who did a lot of deals for Sam Allardyce in his time at Bolton - and indeed did likewise for Allardyce's big buddy Peter Reid when he was in charge of Sunderland.

The United delegation was housed in the Meridian Beach Plaza Hotel, which is where football people stay whenever they are in Monaco.

And it was United's bad luck that the Sunderland back room staff just happen to be staying in the same hotel as their reward for gaining promotion this season.

There was also talk coming from Wearside that Allardyce and his agent Mark Curtis are also in Monte Carlo, but I do not believe this is the case.

United may or may not like The Chronicle revealing their trip to the principality, but our take is that the supporters will be encouraged that they are taking action to appoint a new manager and strengthen their squad sooner rather than latter.

There is no doubt Morris has his finger on what is happening in Europe, and he took in Sion's game with Grasshoppers in Switzerland on Wednesday night.

Big Sam's replacement at Bolton Sammy Lee was also at Sion, from whom United signed Swiss full-back Marc Hottiger in Kevin Keegan's time at St James' Park.

United cannot announce the appointment of Allardyce until a board meeting early next week, and they will not be put off by a poll on ChronicleLive that suggests more fans don't want him than do.

At 1pm yesterday Gerard Houllier had 56% per cent support, with Allardyce on 33% and Sven-Goran Eriksson on 11%.

But early today Allardyce and Houllier were neck and neck and Eriksson trailing in their wake.

Erikkson is a no-goer and the Houllier camp are under the impression that their man is not wanted either.

The Chronicle was told from Portugal on Tuesday that big Phil Scolari was a rival to Big Sam, but we did not take this seriously - and neither are United.

And reports today that United are hanging back on Allardyce before seeing if Alan Shearer is interested in replacing Glenn Roeder are simply not correct.

The decision on who our next manger is lies with the fans. Just like it did when Roeder got appointed. It depends on how many fans e-mail NUFC demanding such and such a person. I, alone, must have sent in excess of 3 to 4 thousand (as I and you lot also did, no doubt, when Roeder was appointed) e-mails so far with my suggestion!

3 to 4 thousand sent e-mails for Roeder to be manager?

Hmm, I think I might pick up Ritchie's idea of a pro-Hitzfeld wurst-campaign and go to the bakery and order 500 pretzels to be sent to Newcastle.

My apologies. I didn't get my point across very well. I was being sarcastic. I was referring to the time when Portly Freddie attempted to pass the responsibility of Rodders' appointment down to the supposed huge numbers of messages he had received demanding G. Roeder was given the job. Not one person I know e-mailed NUFC!
