Craig 6682
Angry Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has told Michael Owen to show some loyalty and warned him none of the 'big four' clubs want to buy him. Shepherd is furious after reports suggested Owen, who has played only 13 games since joining Newcastle for £17m in 2005, could leave in the summer. "Michael has two choices: he can come out and tells our fans that he is happy here," Shepherd told the Daily Express. "Or I tell him none of the big four are interested. Because that's the case." A report in the Times newspaper suggested Owen could be available for less than £10m and could be a target for the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. But Shepherd went on: "These suggestions will not impress our fans after what has happened in the last couple of years. "This report was a very thinly-disguised attempt to flog Owen from under our feet, sourced very close to the player or those who look after him. The information must have come from there, not from our club." Owen arrived at St James' Park in 2005 but played only 11 games in his first season before breaking a bone in his foot. He recovered in time to play at the World Cup where he suffered a serious knee injury which ruled him out of most of this season. Shepherd said: "The loyalty this club has shown him over the last two years, when he had injury problems in his first season and had missed virtually all of this season, deserves something in return. "He has had a really serious injury and no-one, least of all one of the biggest clubs, is likely to take a risk at this stage. "He has to prove to everyone, himself and Newcastle United included, that he is fully recovered and not about to break down again." Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ted/6641411.stm Maybe it's just me but with Shepherd coming out as he has, I can't help but wonder if there is something brewing under the surface with this one... GafferTape 0
So the 9mil release clause exists then...
Gemmill 44850
No denial of the clause, and it does sound like Shepherd thinks that something is being engineered by Owen's people. I can't help but feel that he'd be better off conducting discussions like this in private though ffs. What next, Owen responds through the press?! Sit down in a room and thrash this out man, don't air it in public.

gram 0
Why is the chairman of our club acting like a bellend again? You do this in private not in public. He has a pop at Owen in the most unprofessional way he can. Its his way of saying "If Owen goes its his fault, not mine" Well, you fat useless turd - it is your fault. You are the one who employed a fella simply not up to the job. Players see a club in decline and don't want to piss their career away. Seems reasonable to me. If I was Michael Owen I would out of there like a shot.
Gemmill 44850
It's so stupid, it's untrue. He's basically taunting our most valuable asset in the press: "Do you really think any of the big 4 want you?!". Talk about a chairman alienating our best player. At a time when we need to appoint a new manager, the Chairman initiates a public feud with his best player and announces that said player could be trying to engineer a move away. Brilliant Freddy. That'll get the big managers hammering on your door.
David Kelly 1244
He's trying to deflect blame from himslef for yet again (he did the same with Kluivert) being arrogant enough to beleive we will be in Europe every season and allowing a player to have ridiculous get out clause in his contract. And yet again he's making a complete arse of himself doing this in the press. You couldn't blame Owen from wanting away with the state the club is in and the way the fat man has gone on about trying to prevent him playing for England, although I would be disapointed if he's trying to engineer a move after contributing so little to the club. That'll get the big managers hammering on your door. That's the way I see it - fucking bully-boy tactics and basically telling Owen that he owes the club! Wrong fucking attitude completely, Owen himself came out the other week and said he was wracked with guilt about the fact that our fans haven't seen and value out of him yet but to hear it so brashly from his own chairman - the man who spent all the time pointing out how worthwhile it would be coming to Newcastle, the more you think he'll just say "I can't be fucking arsed with this" It's not like we're an attractive proposition to him at the moment either is it? Gemmill 44850
If I'm Michael Owen and assuming I'm already trying to engineer a move away, when I pick up my paper this morning and see this I'm picking up my phone and telling my agent to fucking redouble his efforts to get me away. Arrgghh man, I just can't get my head around how this stupid fat prick thinks that this is acceptable behaviour or anything like the kind of management expected from a PLC chairman. It's incredible. sweetleftpeg 0
Why doesn't Freddie just shut the fuck up and tell Owen this on the private, rather than hanging it out to dry in the media and possibly fucking Owen off. Is there no end to this twats stupidity? For the final time, you're utter shit at dealing with the media and putting your foot in it and are a total PR disaster, either shut up or get someone else to speak to the press. FFS do these things behind closed doors. You don't have to be intelligent or cunning or even sensible to make money. Plenty do it just by being pig ignorant and completely ruthless (wasn't his money made in scrap dealing anyway?). FFS clearly comes from the latter school of "success". Beat me to it there Fop, pre-emptive propaganda the type of which the club specialises in when a player may be on his way out.

Ken 119
Can't help but think this is the fat prick's pathetic attempt to get back onside with us fans. He probably thinks in his feeble mind that saying something as fucking stupid as this will a)force Owen's hand and publically state he'll be here next season b)get onside with the fans he knows (but is oblivious to the fact it's so widespread) are against him. I think this tactic has backfired. BIGTIME. Gawd I wish he has a coronary tomorrow... Edited May 10, 2007 by Ken
Renton 21606
Is anyone going to defend Shepherd now after this? LeazesMag, where the fuck are you, do you still support your chairman? Barney 0
Embarrassing stuff again. Mickey Mouse stuff from the chairman. As people have pointed out, Owen has done nothing since the injury when talking about Newcastle but mention how he owes the fans and the guilt he feels(honestly or not). Fatty obviously knows he wants out, which is totally understandable, by the time the next manager comes in, it'll be 3 seperate managers that he'll have played under here in less than 20 games. We're turning into a fucking cartoon. Freddy is once again going down the bully boy tactic route and is now trying to force Owen(our best player) into repeating the same soundbyte he's said a million times already, to guilt him into staying. Laughing stock.
