MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to make a sensational summer move for Michael Owen.

Sir Alex Ferguson has focused his search for a striker on Newcastle's 27-year-old England star, who has a £12million release clause in his contract.

Owen has been out with a serious knee injury since last summer's World Cup finals but scored in a friendly game against Gretna last week.

He has been pleading with Toon boss Glenn Roeder for a chance in the first-team and could make his comeback against Chelsea next week.

Ferguson will only launch a bid if he is fully satisfied Owen has recovered from the knee operation.

A well-placed United source told us: "It is no secret that Sir Alex wants another striker and he is bound to be attracted by someone of Owen's pedigree at such a competitive price. Naturally we would have to be certain he has recovered from his injury and that is why his return will be closely monitored.

"Ideally we want to see him in action for several games between now and the end of the season."

United's interest is certain to appeal to Owen, even though he still feels a debt to Newcastle after they paid £16m to sign him from Real Madrid nearly two years ago.

Owen still has his main home in the north-west, near Chester, even though he has a property in the north-east.

He is itching to get back into Premiership action and has also earmarked England's Euro Championship qualifier against Estonia in June for his international return.

It's a tough one for him, I'm sure he does feel bad about not playing enough for us but at the end of the day the injuries weren't his fault and given the choice between playing for an average side with no European football and the possible PL and CL champions I wouldn't blame him for going.

If he can go for 12 million whomever negotiated his contract wants shooting.

Getting 12 million after what we've paid in fees and wages and considering what we've got out of him (not really his fault) would make him our most expensive mistake by a long way.

I'd also say any chance of a top 6 finish next would go with Owen, as I can't see us being able to replace him. :)

And of course we all believe everything the Fat Man says, don't we?

Nope of course not but i don't think he's a complete idiot either

Kluivert anyone?

I distinctly remember Fat Fred saying there was no clauses and it was a three year contract and then a year later, that wasn't the case.

 Really?

We were desperate to sign Owen, this was Freddy's crowning moment, the biggest signing since Shearer and Fatty would have done anything Owen wanted in order to bring him here, including a release clause which I'm guessing becomes active should we finish below a certain place in the league or not be playing European football.

does anyone honestly think we'd pay his wages all season while he recovers and allow him to fuck off to man utd as he regains fitness no chance

next season however......

If he has a release clause then there's pretty much nothing we can do about it.

Story sounds made up really 'high placed source'

Total dejavu that I already posted that in this thread already

Anyway, Owen wasn't £16m in real pennies though was he, as part of his fee was offset against unpaid installments of the Woodgate transfer, so any 'alleged' buyout clause (I don't believe there is one) could realisically be there or thereabouts.

I'm quite shocked that he has just 2 years left - did he really only sign a 4 year contract?

After the way he sweated out his contract at Liverpool, i'd be more worried about losing him for nowt. The least he could do to prove loyalty is sign a 2 year extension on the original terms.
