SIDWELL ON HIS WAY TO JOIN TOON

NEWCASTLE boss Glenn Roeder has won the race to sign Reading's contract rebel Steve Sidwell.

Sidwell, 24, will be left out of Reading's line-up to face Fulham today as manager Steve Coppell is resigned to him going to St James' Park this summer.

Former Arsenal trainee Sidwell, a free agent this summer, turned down a final £25,000-a-week contract offer to stay at Reading.

That alerted several big clubs including Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton, to the player who has impressed in his first season in the Premiership.

But Sidwell favours a move to Newcastle because he believes he will get the best first-team opportunity in the North-East.

Sidwell has already held unofficial talks with Newcastle and the club have outlined their plans for the future, leaving him impressed and ready to sign.

Roeder and his Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd sold the idea to Sidwell and he has told friends he is on his way to join the Toon Army.

Coppell is well aware of Sidwell's intentions to go to the North-East and is now planning for the future, which is why he will leave him out for the rest of the season.

Sidwell spoke with Coppell yesterday and the pair remain on good terms. But they will go their different ways this summer as Sidwell gets his move.

what sort of shit do we tell these players about our ambition for the clubs future?

Duff, Owen, Parker, Emre, Martins all left bigger clubs for us and made simliar noises about liking where the club was headed. From where im sitting the club has been headed downhill for 5 years now!

To be fair, if he wants first team football, this is the perfect place to come (as well as stupid wages which no other club will pay).

Sidwell is a first team regular at a lower level club. Those above were not. I fail to see the point.

'Level' not 'League'

I think you'll struggle to find anyone who seriously believes Reading -> NUFC is a step down.

For nowt, I think it's a reap coup (if true). I heard two weeks ago that Beresford had apparently let slip at one of the talk ins that Sidwell would be signing. I assume he's still pally with Pedro which is where he'll be getting his info. Although, legally, we're not allowed to speak to him or his agent till June, so we must have tapped him up.

To be honest i know nowt about him, but the fact is as long as he's decent we have to start bringing in some players on the cheap/on frees as well as paying big money for players if we're goiing to overhaul our squad.

We can legally speak to him as of 6th months before his contact is due to expire so around about Dec31st 2006.

He is definitely not bad for getting depth into the squad, although that is much more needed in other positions. But I guess if Sidwell is coming in we will see at least one out of Parker, Butt and Emre leaving.

I think that's only for non-domestic transfers.

I dunno, I am sure Gary Caldwell worked his move to Celtic under that ruling.

The same country that Caldwell was playing in for Hibs?

It could have been worse, it could have been Patrokles correcting you and the start of another major bitchfest... :P

Supporting Brock's point, to be fair.
