Gemmill 47364
Whereas Martins is like Lua Lua (but with more talent), he likes to receive the ball at his feet, run at defenders, beat them and then striking the ball, usually with such venom that the keeper is tested and because of this he is at a loss to the "work-rate" required. It's not in his nature to make that pre-emptive run just in case the defender makes a mistake, although after that opportunity with the blades keeper on Saturday he may think about it more. All strikers are required to make pre-emptive runs and to anticipate where the ball is going. As for Martins liking to receive the ball into feet then commit defenders, I haven't seen a great deal of that tbh. I've seen him receive the ball into feet and demonstrate the touch of a dyspractic rapist as it pings off him like a pinball, and the only time I've really seen him put defenders under much pressure is chasing down lost causes - his pace is used to catch up to defenders because of his lack of anticipation, when it should be used to show him a clean pair of heels. I think you've basically described how you'd like Martins to be. The reality is quite a bit different.
Isegrim 10035
Jury defo still out on Martins tbh. He's had more bad games than good since he joined IMO. The worrying thing is that we have not found a way to adjust the team to his style and his style the team's (if we do have any). I don't like to agree with Anal O., but he is actually correct in his assessment that Martins is having either absolutely belters or his looking totally shit. There has been hardly any middle ground so far. But he has shown glimpses of his talent and especially needs another genuine striker next to him instead of the likes of Dyer or Sibierski. Certainly got the best goals to shit games ratio in the league. Was excellent on Saturday, then nothingless again on Monday. Really frustrating, although the absolute lack of service yesterday was telling
Fop 1
He's been a saviour this season, but in all honesty he could have been even more. He's brilliant in flashes and then goes missing in some games (lack of service won't help of course - but then Shearer used to suffer from that, but it wasn't as noticeable because he'd often bury his 1 or 2 real chances that he got), he needs to be more consistent and do more of the "boring" stuff I think which would hopefully improve his consistency and over all game a lot. Playing/training with Owen might help, I guess. Although equally I guess first season in the premiership and that he is relatively young do need to be taken into consideration as well…. so it’s a question of will he improve on his weaknesses or just keep them al la Bramble. I think you've basically described how you'd like Martins to be. The reality is quite a bit different. I don't doubt that gemma. Unlike the last 10 years, this season's coverage of the toon here has been sparse to say the least. And most of what I've see of Martins has been the goals he's scored in highlights packages. Highlights packages that feature him running at defenders and scoring goals. And I know that isn't enough to form an opinion of him but that is what can be seen in those 20 second clips of brilliance, not the 88 minutes of dross. By the way all strikers aren't required to make pre-emptive runs, well not in the toon hoy it up the field style chase after it like a dog. Look at Totti or Del Piero or Vieri, players that Martins has been playing against and probably admiring for his career prior to moving to Newcastle. Even Le Tisser had a career as a striker who didn't chase the ball like a dog down the park.

Holden McGroin 6983
If a player scores 30 goals a season but plays crap 1/2 the time, does it matter? 30? Can you name one example? Gary Lineker didnt do anything out of the box and a certain Andy Coles build up play was pretty poor depsite scoring bag fulls for us.
