Villarreal star Diego Forlan has revealed that he turned down an audacious approach from Sunderland.

The ambitious Championship outfit have been revitalised this term under Roy Keane.

The Black Cats are locked in the Championship promotion battle and Keane, backed by chairman Niall Quinn - is already looking towards next season, which they hope will be in the top-flight.

Forlan has now revealed that his ex-Manchester United team-mate Keane - offered him the chance of a return to England with a move to the Stadium of Light.

However, the Uruguayan striker decided to pen a new long-term deal at El Madrigal - but admitted a return to English shores is still an attractive option.

"I am a very good friend of Roy from my stay at United. For me, he is a star worldwide," he told The Mirror.

"Roy called me to explain his project at Sunderland and offered the chance to play there as one of the main reinforcements in the next campaign.

"I'm grateful but I'm happy here. But I may return one day. Nothing is impossible in football."

Mackems haven't showed ambition like that in a long time.

things could get even more depressing next season. i can see the mackems coming up, beating us and finishing in the top half under keane while we continue to languish under roeder

It will be interesting to see just what Keane can do in the premiership tbh. I don't think it's much of an achievement to do what he has so far given the resources available (just look what Reid & McCarthy did).

He will have more money available than previous makems I'm sure but we know only too well that spending money is no guarantee.

That said I'm sure we will continue to struggle if Roeder is still in charge (which I'm all but resigned to) so they could quite easily overtake us!
