In all honesty if Shearer hadn't retired he'd have probably played every single game he wasn't injured for this season (even though he'd have been pretty much stationary and knackered)..... the scary bit is that we'd probably be doing better too.

You must be forgetting how bad it was Bobby watching him during those past two seasons.

Chelsea at home 2004 the last time we saw anything of Shearer IMO to what he was with that goal.

Dyer's turn this week is it?

Does anyone like any of our players?

Only a few, but Kieron Dyer comes under my list of people I really can't stand - both as a footballer and a person.

I don't really understand Bobby's dislike of Dyer. Especially when it's seemingly based on his performances more than his character - his character is suspect, but of no interest to me, but he's definitely one of our better players. He comes pretty far down on the list of people to have a go at imo.

The only criticism I have of Dyer is that he dissapears from games too easily. However, to give him the benefit of the doubt, this may be due to the way we're playing.

Not really a forward though is he. I'm not sure what his best position is (free role behind the front two?) but he isn't comfortable at all getting the ball with his back to goal.

Aye, that's kind of what I meant. The system, and what he's been asked to do in it, isn't helping him.

He is useful up front in games where you play a counter attacking style with quick forwards having loads of space. To play him up front in games where the opposition is playing something like a 9-1-1 formation is just absolutely nonsense. You shouldn't even need a UEFA Pro badge to see this... :o

Aye, good point. Also, for the first 10-15 minutes we tried a few early balls into the channels. This was the only way we were ever going to be likely to break them down with Dyer and Martins up front (given the defensive way Man City were set up). It's a hard ball to hit though (especially for our players :o ) and I felt that because it didn't come off early on (coupled with a lack of confidence) the players lost the courage of their convictions (understandable tbf) and stopped trying to play that pass. After that happened the two upfront had no chance. That doesn't come close to excusing Martins performance btw.

Even in Dyer's pomp, apart from running around, what does he bring to the team??

Even in his good old days (few though they have been) he gave virtually no end product. Apart from goals at St Mary's and Goodison, I can't really think of what benefit he's really been. Even when he plays for Engerlund he brings very little.

I actually think that running around is a benefit of him and have always liked his style of play. He makes himself available and creates space by unsettling the structure of opposition teams. Of course it would be nice if he had scored more, but this doesn't mean he has contributed nothing to the team. The formula "doesn't score goals"=SHIT is far too simplistic for me.
