Comments from Freddy Shepherd as reported by the Sunday Mirror, 2nd April 2006:

"Our aim is to have the new management structure in place before the last ball of the season is kicked.

"We don't want to have uncertainty lingering on through the close season and we want supporters and players to finish the season knowing who will be in charge next August.

"We have taken our time, because this is one of the biggest decisions in the history of this club.

"The top clubs are opening up a huge gap between themselves and others. We need to get the right man to ensure we are one of those leading clubs.

"We have had a host of top names declaring their interest but we have kept them secret. When the time is right - and that isn't too far away - we will name the man to lead us into the future."

Aye I remember that comment well. I actually took him seriously for once, thinking he realised the gravity of the situation.

"On reflection we've decided to put as little thought as possible into the whole thing, and will be appointing the caretaker full time."

5th best managerial appointment he's made though.

Still doing better than Robson according to my figures :o

That's ok then.

By my calculations he's only won 27% of his league games as a full time manager.

Pretty sure such thing as "calculations" are banned here tbh, better ask Gemmill if it's ok. ;)

Firstly, pipe down Fop.

I too thought FS had finally twigged that we needed a top class manager, but he seemed incapable of saying to Roeder, 'thanks very much for the great job you've done over these 10 games, but we're not looking at continuing with you at the helm'. Or words to that effect. Instead he bottled it and took the easy/cheap option.

Ridiculous as it wasn't certain for a long time if Roeder was actually allowed to take the job without having the necessary "qualifications"... :o

But you're a glass half empty, miserablist kind of guy. I'm a glass half full, benefit of the doubt, happy faced individual.

Fop starting shit again. Who'll be man enough to finish it though?

Continuing shit I think you'll find.

But there seem to be a lot of people here that can give it but just can't take it. :o

tbh I think his options ran out and Roeder was what was left ;)

Actually I made a mistake and we've won 30% of our games, not 27% (won 10, played 33). My outlook on the club is irrelevant.

I thought I told you to zip it, Fop!

No idea why you'd think I'd notice or care if you did frankly, or are sarcastic comments carried over only allowed for some people? ;) (although even looking for it I have no idea unless you also post under "Ally"?)

But on topic, Newcastle board haven't shown any real sense since appointing Robson (which was such an obvious appointment it doesn't count), although frankly Roeder's appointment probably did (and still does) make more sense than appointing Souness ever did. :o

33?

31 in the league.

EDIT: Aah, 2 at the end of last season...

Is he not in charge of cup games?

Oops, I was looking forward a week - 32% it is then.

Seriously, you can't include cup games and make a fair comparison with other manager's track records based on this. For instance, what if one manger got ManU away in the FA cup in the third round, and another got a string of thrid division outfits at home? The latter's win ratio would be significantly boosted. Being in Europe would be a big boost too, and by your reckoning a manager getting results in the intertoto is better than drawing in the CL!

Aye you're right (this is “logic” however and may result in you being burnt at the stake), on the other hand stats and football stats especially are never really going to be 100% fair and correct and going on a cup run might require a bit of luck but equally still is an achievement (although I bet Robson’s would be higher if stuff like CL results were kinda “weighted”).

What amazes me about those stats is how bad the win ratio for Dalglish and to a degree Gullit (madman that he was) were…. although thinking about it all I can really remember is cup runs from them so maybe that explains it.

By the same token, a team in the champions league should be able to attract a better class of player and should therefore have a better team geared towards success in that competition.

A team struggling to get in the Intertoto cup attracts Onyewu, Bernard and Sibierski so managing them to a result is just as much of a challenge.

A win is a win basically, you can only beat the teams you're playing.

I seem to remember under Gullit we didn't win another game after beating Spurs in the FA Cup semi until the season ended.
