Got a new PC with what is supposedly a 320Gb HD yet when I go into the list of drives it shows:

Local Drive (C:)

283Gb Free of 298Gb

Theres no other drives listed so its not partitioned so does anyone know where my other 22Gb has gone?

Its the way they're sized - 320Gb is the nominal size counting a Gb as 1024x1024x1024b (Binary) - When they are sold the size is talked up ie 320 but then windows rounds it down for the actual storage space based on a more decimal size.

Also when its formatted some space is allocated for the table that tells the disk which file is where - a bit like an index in a book.

I have a couple of 300Gb which are listed as 279 and 250s bwhich are listed as 233s.

What make is the PC pud??

Certain makes (Dell in particular) have a small partition (less than 50MB)that has all the diagnostics tools setup on it.

Had it built specifically from Orbit Computers, not quite sure about this bloody Vista though!

Is it listing that in Windows or on boot/within Bios?

Sure Vista doesn't have some "new feature" where it discounts storage used for system files or cashing maybe (or the massive amount of DRM spyware built in)?

I paid around £500 for mine and I'm willing to put that again against the proposition that you rmachine will be twice the caliber of mine.... :icon_lol:

I bought Dell and to be honest it's a decent "rig" (as the kids are calling them these days) but I find that I've already consumed the hard-disk space, I'm frustrated by it's speed... or lack there of, and I know I could have a better graphics card.

so I'm going to have to spend £60 on an external hard-drive ( http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/Search...14&CatId=0) and £75 on improving it's memory ( http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/vi...=&pagename= ) ...

when if I'd bought a custom built machine I'm guessing I could have got that spec for around the £500 I spent on a Dell pc...

:icon_lol: feckers.
