Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
I've visited two of my mates recently who have houses of a similar size to mine (2/3 bed terraced). One has his loft completely fitted out and the other has a basement with basically the same footprint as the house. This obviously gives tons of extra storage space, but I haven't got a basement and would need to employ a victorian child to get into the loft space as the hatch is so small. I'm now thinking about the possibilities of doing something with the loft. Do you lot make the most of unused space in your houses?

Gemmill 44498
I looked into getting the loft done in my new place - completely sorted, with a staircase built etc, but it was going to cost a fortune. Because it's a flat it would have involved getting the entire floor of my flat and all the walls upgraded with extra fireproofing - the idea being that if there was a fire in the flat below me, the extra fireproofing would buy me 10 minutes to get out if I was in the loft. Anyway, the flat was going to be unliveable in that time period, so it was a no go. I'd love a house with a huge basement like you describe though - most American houses have that sort of thing an'all.

And it's where every American child some day hopes to be allowed to relocate their bedroom.
Mags 1
Loft and basement both utilized- loft is a fourth bedroom and basement is finished over and used for storage of 'stuff that is very necessary' to the mental health of my sons. rikko 20
There is no basement i'm yet to explore the main loft as the hatch is way out my reach without a ladder of somekind of description. The miniloft is in need of the victorian child as its anything but spacious... Might consider doing something with it if its cheap enough.
Magma 0
Don't have a basement but the Loft has been turned into a bedroom, but it has a cupboards that we keep the christmas tree decorations, etc in.
Happy Face 29
Don't talk to me about lofts. Had my hatch moved last week. The dust/soot that came down was unbelievable. Even with taped up doors it got everywhere. Need all new carpets cos they were fucked and the cleaner charged me £135. Plus I'm sure that's what broke my receiver...and the insurance won't even pay out on it
The Fish 10779
my bedroom is in the basement it's Dave's Cave apparently, cos fuck all natural light gets in and I have a few dark posters on the wall which makes the place seem even smaller

norm 0
couple of years ago we had our loft converted into another bedroom....cost a fucking fortune! you loose a lot of space as the floor sort of comes up and the ceiling comes down if you know what I mean, so when you are poking ya heed through the hatch now and thinking "hey there's loads of space in here" sometimes not necessarily so! planning permission, loads of mess, garden and drive turned into builders yard, blokes ogling the wifes tits, steel girders and the like going up...mind it's a canny job, but makes the hoose look a bit lopsided from outside! cheaper than moving house though....and now its been done up its the dogs bollocks! Kid Dynamite 7009
My loft contains a mattress, about 4 TVs, a video player, record player, keyboard, all our suitcases, bags of clothes, my mothers wedding dress, a boogie board, 2 arials and lots of other shit. snakehips 0
I'm surprised my loft hasn't collapsed with all the crap that's up there With three tonnes of Christmas decs and twenty-odd years of accumulated shite (how, man, divvent throw that out, it might come in useful one day) the place is a mess. I believe that if you get the loft converted it adds a heck of a lot on to the price of the house, but actually doing it would be a long way off for us. sweetleftpeg 0
I dread to think what's in our loft. When my brother opened his up, he sticks his head up there with a torch, pans around and staring at him only a few feet away was this huge doll. He fucking shit himself. Gemmill 44498
Re Happy Face's soot comment - when I was looking into getting mine fitted out, I had a lad from the council come out to have a look so that I could get the drawings done etc. He turns up in his glad rags, apologises for looking like a tart, and announcing that he's off to his gran's birthday party after. Anyway, up he goes into the loft, and comes down 5 minutes later looking like Al Jolson. I'd imagine he went home and got changed before his gran's party. Smooth Operator 10
Got our loft done out last summer for 15 grand, pretty cheap compared to some quotes. Did a cracking job as well. Was gonna be our room with an en suite but wor lass decided to give it to her daughter. So we saved a bit of money and put the en-suite on hold for now. Canny big mess like but it all came up ok, proper spindel staircase too, looks the business. Or it will do when I get round to painting the fucker!
