Organisers are hoping to sign up all 556 players to donate their wages into a hardship fund. It has been set up to help nurses who get into financial difficulties in their early career. West Ham United captain Nigel Reo-Coker is one of eight footballers who have signed up to the Mayday For Nurses campaign on May 13. Others include Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville of Manchester United, Spurs players Paul Robinson and Jermain Defoe, and Portsmouth goalie David James. Reo-Coker said: "My mum was a nurse and I know how hard she had to work and I know how hard it is for nurses. "For me, they are the real heroes in our society and this is a chance for us to make a difference." The campaign's founder, economist Noreena Hertz, said nurses were among the worst paid public servants with professional qualifications. They earn a third less than teachers by the time they are established in their careers. Fair play to them, although some of them earn 4 times my annual salary in a week, so they're not going to miss it. Good to see them acknowledging the work nurses do Absolute fucking disgrace about the pay "rise" though. The statement about how nurses get paid a third less than teachers by the time they are established in their careers just shows that despite nursing being a degree qualification, we're still seen as them little vocational angels who would almost do it for nothing! Not that nurses don't deserve more cash, as they undoubtedly do, but there are plenty of overpaid professions you could target and plenty of underpaid people who deserve more for what they do... If any employee takes part in industrial action, he or she could personally face four arenas of accountability for this action: disciplinary proceedings before the employer; criminal proceedings; civil proceedings for negligence; and professional conduct proceedings. Part of the issue is that women in general get a lower percentage of their male equivalents pay, throw into the mix these ideals of vocational work ie nursing and teaching and the picture is even more disconcerting. Women in Euro on average get 82% of their male conterparts pay in the U.K. this figure is 63%!
