Gordon Brown wants to make 'Britishness' one of the themes of his premiership, if and when he becomes PM The Chancellor is promoting the move on the grounds that it would encourage integration and help newcomers settle. He said: "Being a British citizen is about more than a test, more than a ceremony; it's a kind of contract between the citizen and the country involving rights but also involving responsibilities that will protect and enhance the British way of life."" I hope there is some mileage in it though....I'm never happy with these annoncement till people start saying they will 'boycott' the corner shop or Red Ken gets involved. How can you ask immigrants to do that when I doubt a fraction of British people do anything whatsoever to protect and enhance this mythical 'British way of life.' If you want immigrants to be British, you really need to browbeat stoicism and self-deprecation into them, and ensure that they refuse to talk to their neighbours. I'm 100% British by birth. Born and raised in Gloucester/Cheltenham, though thankfully my parents were from elsewhere, so at least I'm not West Country born and bred. I think he means make an effort to find gainful employment and pay taxes rather than arriving and spending all of their energy trying to get benefits and hospital treatment. Volunteer work shows intent to engage in the society, like 99% of British people do. Immigration is an issue because the percentage of people entering the country who are merely a burden on state resources is too high, hence we are discussing it.
