Fairly unique? *tuts loudly*

Unique as a society in many of their practices and ways, but equally not in others, then.

(although I think "fairly unique" would be fair use in the Grammar Nazi's court of appeal )

Thought about going to see this, then saw it get universally panned by the critics, and I also found out there isn't a single real background in the entire film. What's the film industry coming too?

edit: and I was pissed that I missed Outlaw as it similarly got panned and pulled from the flicks, ended up falling asleep during Hot Fuzz

This man's opinion means nothing after his original diagnosis of The Departed.

I missed Departed out of my own absentmindedness.

300 - I don't fancy any film that is 100% CGI, with the exception of Star Wars, Toy Story and Lord of the Rings

I think the difference for me is its supposed 'historical element'. I like my realism in real films.

It surely can't be that real....I mean 300 Greeks holding back 50,000 Persians...

There are some nice bits in it..

Went to the gym today, of course

Brilliant historical novel about Thermopylae, highly recommended for anyone who's interested - Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield

Was meant to be getting turned into a film directed by Michael Mann, but seems to have slipped off the radar. He went and did Collateral instead.

Shame that, it'll probably never be made now because of 300 which better be good because if it's not it's a disservice to one of history's great stories.

The Spartans were sort of the Nazi's of the ancient world and are a compelling subject.

I don't think Nazi is a particularly fair comparison (except in the most indirect military sense, some thing Alexander and the Roman’s repeated really), both because the world was a vastly different place, and because Sparta did both somewhat directly and indirectly influence Athenian democracy (in some ways they were much more liberal and equal than them, in fact, although in many ways not), which is pretty much at least the barest ideological framework of the modern idea.

But they are fascinating though definitely (as is most of Mediterranean history of that time period tbh).

That's why I said "sort of"

Nearest contemporary comparison IMO though, much more so than the Romans or Alexander

I don't really think there is a contemporary comparison though, they were and are (and probably always will be) fairly unique as a society, as well as the world of that time being a vastly different place, so as I said one like the nazi's is pretty unfair.

In fact in many ways a “nazi” comparisons could be made to the Persian empire of the time (although that would be equally unfair tbh).

The nazi’s were a perversion and corruption of fairly modern society (even though they repeatedly hailed back to Romanish roots this was never really true), where as the Spartans were very much of their time and world, albeit in a very unique way.

No big deal I guess, just as I said I don’t think very fair to them.

My utmost admiration Fop for not saying that comparing the Spartans to the Nazis is complete bollocks and only made by people who have no idea who and what the Spartans were.

There are some nice bits in it..

Yep it wasn't just 300 Spartans, it was 300 Spartans, a maybe couple of 1000 helots from Sparta, as well as a few 1000 other troops from various Greek sources.

So it was probably 4000-7000 Greeks against 75,000-300,000+ Persians.

The were still hugely outnumbered by the Persians, however, but they chose their (narrow) ground well and quite simply the Persians probably couldn't bring enough numbers to bare to overwhelm the Spartan/Greek phalanx long speared killing machine (although there’s also accounts of them using fainted routs to draw their enemy in, before turning and destroying them – something that couldn’t have been done without the utmost skill, discipline and training) .

Possibly they also underestimated them initially and by the time they didn’t the scale of casualties inflicted would have already sapped Persian morale massively.

There are examples of similar things (although probably not quite as dramatic) in military history right up until firearms stopped that sort of thing being as effective tbh. Frankly trying to take a Greek Phalanx without flanking it was probably something like trying to stop an industrial meat grinder by throwing meat into it, possible, but it was going to take a lot of “meat” to do it.

300 Spartans not sure about Helot numbers. 300 Thebans and 700 Thespians (spent most of their time striking dramatic poses and emoting).

For a big US blockbuster, all of the main characters are played by British actors. Plus that Aussie bloke from LOTR. Learnt there lesson after the wankstain that was Troy.

Which Aussie one.

Erm..the one that nearly gets burnt by his father at the end cos he thinks he's dead.

Cool. It's just that Elrond is Aussie too.

wasn't the Persian army also made mostly of conscripts, slaves and mercernaries?

Where as the Spartans were warriors all, also benefitting from fighting for their country and freedom, instead of fighting from fear and greed.

(Or that's what my more historical aware housemate told me ;) )

My point being that the feat has it's impressive-ometer needle dampened by the fact that they weren't fighting against the Persian SAS...

It's still impressive, but the "facts" detract from the legend.
