Craig 6701
Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder has revealed he is pushing England striker Michael Owen hard as he attempts to get him fit before the end of the season. The 27-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward returned to running outdoors earlier this week almost seven months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament at the World Cup finals. Owen still faces a gruelling fight for match fitness but Roeder will not be easing him back into the fold. Roeder said: “The players were very happy to see Michael out on the grass running again. I saw him work myself the other morning and I would say he is back into serious running work. “He was blowing very, very hard at the end of the running session. It is not a case of us easing him gently back to running, he was virtually at full blast. “He certainly felt the effects of the physical session he did at the end because it took him a good 15 minutes to recover. “We are not bringing him back easy; he is back into serious hard work now and loving every minute of it. “He can now definitely see light at the end of the tunnel and knowing Michael Owen he will be counting the days down now to when he can start joining in and working with the rest of the squad in the football practices. “Everything is very positive about Michael and it is great to have him back on the training ground.” Owen set his sights on an April return after undergoing two operations last year to repair the damage and that remains his target. Source: http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?comm...emierLeagueNews So he's coming back from an injury that 10-15 years ago would have finished his career without question and our manager is saying "no easy re-introduction"????? For fuck's sake!

For fuck's sake! Erm, I'm pretty sure he's had full medical clearance to do what he's doing to be honest.

Matty 0
We're not really in the position to know what he should or should not be doing tbh. He needs to be pushed very hard on the cardio-vascular fitness element I'm sure, having not ran for several months.
Guest Patrokles
We should just sit him in a room crocheting for several months and then start him in a Premiership match because that'll be a lot less likely to injure him. There's a world of difference between having someone work hard at running, and playing them when they're not fit. Given Roeder's terrific handling of player injuries so far, I think it's extremely shoddy to take the excuse to lambast him once again.

Craig 6701
I was referring more to our medical staff's outstanding record in recent years. The Steven Taylor carry on last year for instance....

Tom_NUFC 0
Well, I hope they're being careful. Souness kept pushing injured players back too soon and they tended to end up injured again. But Roeder has handled things better so far, so for now I'll trust him on this.

The Steven Taylor carry on last year for instance.... Souness was told by the medical staff of the club that there was a bigger than 60% chance that Taylors shoulder wouldn't last the Liverpool game, yet still played him. Renton 22409
Given that the act of merely standing up crocked him last time, I'm not sure there is any way of easing him back into the game.

Gemmill 47084
That business with Shola was shocking. I remember Roeder wittering on about getting "one last burst" out of him or something. The lad was fucking booked in for surgery at the time.
Guest Patrokles
With Shola it was more about playing through pain, though. When it became obvious that there was a real danger to his career, he was withdrawn.

To see him still being put on a football pitch was shocking tbh.
Park Life 71
I'm sure they are taking all the precautions required. Owen will know how he feels and HE isn't one to play or train if HE doesn't think he's upto it.
