Interesting quandry - whether they asked Shearer beforehand if he wanted it

 

Surely if they did, he would have declined? If they didn't, he's screwed, as if he now says he doesn't want it he will look like he's being ungrateful, or maybe not... anyway, made sense when I started typing

They certainly should have asked him beforehand, but like you i would have thought if they did he would probably have declined or said to delay it.

 

And like you say, if he said anything after he would look ungrateful.
