Asprilla 96
"Martins reached double figures for the season in the Premiership - and beat Bellamy's best ever league return for Newcastle. Bellamy NUFC Premiership goals - by season: 2001/02 9 goals 2002/03 7 goals 2003/04 4 goals 2004/05 7 goals " I know Bellamy gave defences problems so Shearer could score...but all the same.... I already posted this in the "Martins - waste of money or too early to judge thread". It has to be said that Bellamy has improved his finishing since he left us, but I know who I'd rather have at the club. And he isn't a foul mouthed woman beating Welshman. luckyluke 2
Just a shame about the different league positions then and now, eh... Well Martins has a better goal celebration and gives more amusing interviews, so it's swings and roundabouts tbh.

Martins is different to Bellamy. Bellamy's finishing was always weak. He is a good player but never likely to be better than that. The likes of Peter Beardsley were never prolific but could always manage an acceptable tally as a support player. Bellamy isnt in that league either as a finisher or support player. Martins has a lot to prove but he was very good yesterday and will get better. He doesnt seem to think he is bigger than our football club either. Prefer someone like Dean Ashton alongside him. good professional with decent pace and looks like he can read a game.
Matt 0
Those stats are misleading though- Bellamy was not the main striker, Shearer was. A comparison of goals and assists would be more accurate.

I know we give Shola too many excuses, but only after he has fully recovered from his injury & op and now post Shearer will i judge him. With those too, owen not considered, we may have a good partnership.
newcastlebroon 0
bellamy played with better players at the toon though, players who would create goals from nothing, eg, robert, shearer, solano, you can count solano as hes played right back for the majority

Fop 1
Would have been interesting, if obviously impossible, to see Martins in the same team as Bellamy. I actually assumed he'd scored more goals than that, but I guess on reflection his biggest threat was his pace and perhaps his biggest asset was make the opposition worry about that. He certainly missed a lot of goals that someone like Shearer would have put away (although often created those oppertunities, and oppertunities for others, with a burst of pace that Shearer could maybe never have managed). I suppose ideally an Owen/Martins combo would be great and might work a bit like the Yorke/Cole ManU pairing, but I still think we need someone with more presence in the air and ability to hold the ball. Guest alex
I think Martins/Bellamy would be great at home, but I think you'd struggle away from home more often than not in the Prem with those two and no one who can play with their back to goal upfront. Owen/Martins would/will present similar problems imo. It's only a real problem if you try this without the option of something a bit different on the bench. Dr Gloom 22499
martins and owen might work but i fancy recruiting a better target man than le sib, who tbf shouldn't bemore than a 4th or 5h choice. i like the idea of a big man/little man fron two. ashton with either martins or owen would be good -let's face it, neither are going to be fit all season and it's good to have at least 2 top class strikers to rotate
