with the bloke from Troy / Bourne Identity, Brian Cox as Dr Lecter

shows just how good Anthony Hopkins was as Hannibal

This goes against the general consensus.

And why are you telling us something shit is on? Will you be telling us The Mint is on ITV later so that we can avoid it?

I smell a rat.

decent film i thought.

and i reckon hopkins based his performance on cox's

I'm surprised. I think they're miles apart. Maybe I'm being tainted by his previous roles [shrugs]

silence of he lambs is the better film - but manhunter is an interesting film nonetheless.

I think this is the better film plot wise. I was only criticising the respective Lecter characters in the original post

wikipedia:

Scottish actor Brian Cox based his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter on Manuel.

Peter Manuel (March 1, 1927 – July 11, 1958) was a U.S.-born British serial killer who committed his crimes in Scotland. He was the second to last person to be hanged in Barlinnie prison and the third last to be hanged in Scotland.

Born in New York to Scottish parents, Manuel and his family moved to Coventry, England in 1932. Considered a juvenile delinquent throughout childhood, Manuel's first jail term was at age 16 for sexual assault. He served further sentences for rape before moving to Glasgow, Scotland in 1953 to join his family, who had moved there.

It was in north west Lanarkshire that he began his killing spree. He was questioned in 1956 for the murder of 17-year-old Anna Knielands, who had been attacked with a length of iron and whose body was discovered on East Kilbride golf course. He was released without charge, but would two years later confess to the murder. On September 17, 1956, the bodies of 45-year-old Marion Watt, her 16-year-old daughter Vivienne, and Marion's sister Margaret were found dead at the Watts's home in Burnside, Glasgow. They had all been shot at close range. The police officer in charge suspected Manuel, who had been out on bail for a burglary at a local colliery. Manuel was questioned again to no avail and two weeks later was jailed for 18 months for the colliery burglary.

On his release, Manuel visited Newcastle Upon Tyne in early December 1957, where he shot and killed taxi driver Sydney Dunn. Returning to Lanarkshire, Manuel's random killings continued, and a sense of fear gripped the county and suburbs of eastern Glasgow. On December 27, 1957, 17-year-old Isabelle Cooke left her home in Mount Vernon to go to a dance at Uddingston Grammar school but never returned. Her body was found buried in a field at nearby Burntbroom. On January 1, 1958, Manuel gunned down 45-year-old Peter Smart, his wife Doris, and their 10-year-old son Michael in Uddingston.

Twelve days later, Manuel was arrested when the new banknotes he stole from the Smarts' home aroused the suspicion of a local bartender. The police traced the notes to Peter Smart and arrested Manuel, who was charged with seven murders. At his trial at Glasgow High Court, Manuel conducted his own defence but was unable to convince the judge of his insanity plea. He was found guilty in May 1958 of seven murders, although many connected with the case believe he killed up to 15 people. He was hanged at Barlinnie prison in Glasgow on July 11, 1958.

seriously?

and pardon me for breathing btw

Not that SOTL is a better film, but that Cox is shit. Most people say he's great in it. I've not seen it and couldn't say tbh.

You may breathe.

No idea about his performance in Manhunter, but Brian Cox is... well, I was going to say a seriously underrated actor, but he seems to have been getting his just rewards in the media etc. over recent years. So let's just call him quite good.

aye, that's what I was getting at

starting to think the retired detective is better in the newer one, and the tooth fairy, and the hack

in fact, yep, just decided, the remake is far superior imho

Going to see the new one at the cinema next wednesday. Trailers look alright but I'm shocked how quickly it's all been pushed through, I think the DVD is supposed to be out in May.

Still would rather be going to see Hot Fuzz though.

Hopkins is pure genius. Holding the torch lit by Burton and the like.

Really liked him in 'The Bounty' come to think of it. He's good but he's made some guff films.

I prefer Hopkins in Silence but then he decends into pantomime for Hanibal and Red Dragon (both of which I enjoyed).

I would also say Silence is the best of the Hanibal films with Manhunter a second.

Manhunter is a completely different film in look and feel to any of the others though.

I don't have high hopes for the new one.
