Personal favourite Singing Voice

I didn't really want to call this thread 'best' singing voice, since there are all sorts of considerations (ie, some people might like Dylan). I'm not really sure how else to phrase it. For me, all of the vocalists I admire for their voices are female.

My top three are probably Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, and Marissa Nadler. Of the three, Nadler stands out. I find it hard to think of anyone with a voice like hers. This isn't to say that she's technically the best, or anything like that, but the clarity of her vocals is super. Additionally, there's a real eerieness to them, whilst still retaining a kind of warmth.

I am sure that most will be familiar with Simone and Springfield, but I suppose this thread serves a two-fold purpose; to stimulate discussion of your favourite vocalists (and why), but also to encourage people to check out Marissa Nadler.

Here are some mp3s to set you on your way:

I suppose I should disclaim that these aren't the kind of songs for when you're in a bright mood. They're good wallowing/evening songs.

oh, and they're nearly all about death.

I know what you're saying about the lay-deez. I've noticed with female solo artists I always get drawn in by a voice but usually their albums aren't interesting enough to bare long term listening. Examples being Indie Arie, Alanis Morisette, a lot of Aimee Mann (though I still love all of Bachelor No 2), Cat Power and Alicia Keys.

Current exceptions are Joanna Newsom, and Neko Case who I'm still besotted with, and you have to include Aretha Franklin.

Not sure you've grasped the concept of favourite there, Brock

The first three are my favourites, the rest are either singers I think are talented, or some are just different (ie voice of an angel )

Seeing Elton John live at the mad stad really was one of the best gigs I've been to.

This is the easiest I ever find answering a question about a favourite. For me there is no better than Mike Patton. He can do it all, from rock to punk to crooning to ballads all the way to noises that I'm not really sure where they come from. Certainly the most versatile modern vocalist, if not one of the most versatile ever. In my opinion of course.

James LaBrie

While I agree with your other three (but you already knew that, right?) I gotta ask about this. I'm a Dream Theater fan, you know that, but La Brie seems a bit hit and miss to me. He pulls off the cheesy parts perfectly, and I do like Dream Theater's cheesy bits, but don't you think he can't do the angry so well?

I think that's why I like what he did with Ayreon a few years ago so much. He was only needed for the cheesy and had blokes like Devin Townsend and Mikael Akerfeldt do the angry for him. Not to give you crap or anything, but I think I like La Brie better when he's poncing around as opposed to trying to be serious and stuff.

How very ignorant of you to dismiss so many artists.

hahahahaha...

I don't think Dani Filth can be classified an artist as opposed to a shrieking wanker with one of the worst cases of little man syndrome the world has seen.

I don't know what you're trying to imply about my performance.
