zico martin 89
Im fearing the worst for my dad-in-law's pc but thought id see if anyone on here can offer any help. the machine is powering up but is mkaing no beep sounds and is showing no video output to the monitor. Ive tried swapping the RAM and the graphics card but this has made no difference. there is power getting to the unit (the fans are all working) so can i assume it's the motherboard or the CPU then? its a few years old now so it could be time for an upgrade

zico martin 89
your bios battery is dead might be a pain to replace on an old motherboard when you say its a pain to change does that mean its not the big silver CR2032 one on the motherboard then? if so could I just swap it over with a battery from another PC? what damage would it do to remove a battery to the other PC? would i lose all the settings? Also, most I've known are soldered in, but don't quote me on it you lose your settings but that's no big deal if you know what they were (basically need to tell it to boot in C: A: D: order). Been a while since I did it, but if it's dead already they're already lost Edited February 5, 2007 by Super_Steve_Howey

A bios battery replacement is one of the easiest fixes u could do.

Jimbo 175
Are you sure its not a duff power supply ? they produce multiple voltages, just because fans are getting power doesn't mean that your processor and RAM are.

zico martin 89
I still suspect the powersupply but there's power getting to the PC - i mean the fans seem to be going fine. there's no beeping noises though which i fear may be a bad sign. well no worse a sign than the fact that its fucked like! so you reckon it may be worth me trying to swap the psu over? anything other than having to give him that bottle of jack i got from him as thanks for fixing it! Take it to someone who knows what he's doing. There's plenty of tools out there now to tell you exactly where the problem lies. A local computer shop will soon be able to test the PSU for you. Gol's right, take it in some where, but just because your fans are running does mean that your other voltages arn't knackered, you need like a 3.3v supply for ram I think, 5.5v or something for your processor not just the 12v for fans etc, if you've lost the voltages for any of those or even if the go slightly out of range then you will have problems.
