Nobby 0
Roeder revealed he is still trying to get at least one more through the door before the window shuts on transfer business tonight. The United boss acknowledged he is still interested in bringing St Etienne forward Frederic Piquionne to Tyneside but admitted he is not hopeful of completing the deal. The French club want £5m for the 28-year-old but Roeder insisted if there is to be any deal it will be similar to the terms agreed with Onyewu. "We are working hard on trying to bring another player in but it's touch and go," said Roeder who scored in Newcastle's 2-0 victory over Preston 20 years ago today. "The player is extremely hungry to prove he is good enough for the Premiership. That is what appeals to me, not players who have dossed around the reserves in Europe for two or three years. "There has been plenty of them around and many have been big names." Newcastle face Arsenal in the race for his signature. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, having lost Robin van Persie for the rest of the season to injury, is believed to be contemplating a move for the Frenchman as cover. But Roeder believes he can persuade the striker to choose Tyneside over north London because he can guarantee something Wenger can't offer the forward. "He (Piquionne) would be a player I like but he has a big price tag and other clubs are in for him," revealed Roeder. "I would like to think he would come here rather than go anywhere else in the Premier League, because he will come here and play games." Meanwhile, PSV's technical director was on Tyneside yesterday trying to resurrect a loan deal with Albert Luque. But the former Deportivo man's huge wages appear to be the biggest obstacle blocking his move to the Dutch outfit. The Spaniard is believed to be on three times the amount of PSV's highest earner. Unless Luque agrees to take a wage cut then he will spend the rest of this season kicking his heels on the sidelines 10:06am today

sicko2ndbest 0
Luque set to join PSV By europeanfootballnews.co.uk - January 31 2007 Newcastle United forward Albert Luque is set to join Dutch Eredivisie champions PSV on deadline day of the transfer window. Luque and PSV have agreed personal terms. The former Spanish international will join PSV on a five month loan. PSV initially wanted to loan Luque for 18 months but Newcastle rejected the offer. PSV are now happy to have agreed a loan deal until the end of the season. Technical manager Stan Valkckx stated: "We're glad that we've reached an agreement with such a big player, let's hope the final details will be sorted soon." Newcastle United and PSV are currently sorting out the last details of the loan deal before Luque will be able to join the Eindhoven-outfit officially. Luque was also linked with a loan move to Villarreal but the Spanish team opted to sign former Newcastle striker Jon Dahl Tomasson on loan.
