NEWCASTLE have been told they can sign St Etienne striker Frederic Piquionne on loan for the rest of the season - but only if they agree to a £5m permanent deal for the 28-year-old in the summer.

Roeder is understood to have made a formal approach to St Etienne over the weekend in an attempt to secure the services of a forward who is also interesting Tottenham and West Ham.

He has been told Piquionne is available on loan but only if his temporary employers agree to complete a £5m permanent transfer at the end of the season.

With Spanish side Real Betis rumoured to be preparing an approach of their own, however, he might have to if he is not to tackle the second half of the season with just Obafemi Martins and Antoine Sibierski up front.

Piquionne appears to have played his last game for St Etienne after suffering a much-publicised bust-up with manager Ivan Hasek earlier this month.

The New Caledonia-born striker, who boasts six goals in 18 Ligue One games this season, had demanded a move to league leaders Lyon after Gerard Houllier expressed an interest in signing him at the turn of the year.

St Etienne officials immediately rebuffed Houllier's offer, insisting they would not sell one of their main assets to a side they regard as one their leading rivals.

Their intransigence has subsequently angered Piquionne and the arrival of a possible replacement - former Nice forward Matt Moussilou - suggests St Etienne have accepted he will be leaving the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard within the next 48 hours.
