Having been forced to operate in the loan market, Glenn Roeder continues to pursue defensive and forward reinforcements for the rest of the season.

The latest unconfirmed reports suggest that we are looking to conclude loan deals with Belgian side Standard Liege for defender Oguchi Onyewu (pictured on left) and with French outfit St.Etienne for striker Frédéric Piquionne.

The Belgian website Flanders News claims that Onyewu arrived on Tyneside over the weekend for talks, as a planned permanent move to Marseille stalled.

Liege won 5-2 at Charleroi on Friday with Onyewu picking up a booking for dissent that would see him suspended from Standard's next fixture.

Onyewu (full name Oguchialu Chilioke Onyewu - "Gooch" for short) is a 24 year-old USA international central defender from Washington DC, who formerly played for French side Metz and La Louviere in Belgium before moving to Liege in 2004.

He appeared in three games for the USA at last year's World Cup Finals.

The Times also names Piquonne as a target - he's 28 and was born in Martinique. He joined St.Etienne in 2004 after spells elsewhere in France with Nimes and Rennes.

He's understood to be in dispute with his present club over their refusal to broker a deal to sell him to Lyon.

In response to claims of interest from Charlton, Piquonne's agent Karim Djaziri suggested that the player had no interest in coming to England - unless it was to a Champions League side.

With Piquonne missing from their lineup, St.Etienne shared six goals at Lens on Sunday after having been 3-0 ahead at one stage.

We need a big powerful CB anyone seen him play much?

Aye, I've seen every one of his 17 caps for the US. The kid's a beast. He's 6'2" 180 lbs. He's got quite a lot of potential and has realized a fair amount of it.

'Gooch' is one of the most popular players currently in the US Squad, having had most of the "chuch norris facts" attributed to him at one point or another.

He's famous for 'staring down' Jared Borgetti at a world cup qualifier in 2005. In this region, most teams will kick you when down, pinch you in the ass etc, to get a rise out of you. Gooch looks like the kind of guy they could rile up so they went after him but just got the stare.

He's a hell of a player, but I don't want him here. We'd just ruin him.

He's SO leaning away from him in that pic, looks like he's bricking it tbh.

7-23.. close game.

NCAA game not football (soccer).

He looks huge, and looks like he could be a good signing but you never know.

How good was his little afro in that video clip when he was getting his hair done. I think he should leave an afro on, would be quality.

Bramble two then.

Could be if we ruin him. However he's proven that he *can* concentrate for 90 minutes in the past.

Lets just hope we dont have much injury time then or extra time for that matter

At least Roeder's got this one to work on from scratch. Bramble was already a well-established mong in black and white when Roeder turned up.
