Skysports.com understand that Newcastle United could indeed still land American star Oguchi Onyewu.

Magpies boss Glenn Roeder has already played down speculation linking him with a move for the Standard Liege centre-half.

It has emerged that Onyewu could be allowed to leave Standard on loan, which would be an ideal scenario for Newcastle.

Standard's general manager Pierre Francois has admitted Onyewu could leave, but is growing concerned at the length of the transfer.

"Why does it continually drag on this way? Don't forget we signed Ivica Dragutinovic from Seville by fax just eight minutes before the window closed last time."

The player himself has long been keen to seal a move to England, having seen potential moves to Middlesbrough, Fulham and Chelsea fail to materialise in recent months.

The likes of Real Madrid and Internazionale have also checked on him, but the main interest at this point is coming from Marseille.

L'OM are very keen and appear at the head of the queue, although skysports.com understand that Onyewu would prefer St James' Park to the Stade Velodrome.

It's harder than people think to sign new players... blah blah blah

Ollie's awards

Jan 27 2007

By Alan Oliver, The Evening Chronicle

Man of the week: Uriah Rennie.

MOMENT OF THE WEEK: When Calum Davenport headed in West Ham's "third goal" and referee Rennie ruled it out.

MOAN OF THE WEEK: Why did so many people get their knickers in a twist because United had scored an "offside goal"?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "I won't sign players whose names I cannot pronounce" - Glenn Roeder after being linked with another tongue-twisting foreign player.

Jesus wept.
