Isegrim 9798
Given that we've been in decline for three years, it's simply not realistic to expect what is, in footballing time, an overnight fix. Well, then Roeder shouldn't publicly set himself apparently unrealistic targets... There's nothing wrong with being ambitious. If he talked about consolidation, rebuilding, etc, then people would frown on him for that, too. As I said, he seems to be in something of a no-win situation as far as some are concerned. I'm not claiming that he's perfect or that everything he's said has been spot-on, but I do think that people are far too quick to criticise EVERYTHING he says, which is what I take issue with. I for my part don't criticise EVERYTHING, but I will criticise EVERY nonsense he comes out with, and he has come out with a lot imho. As I said on a couple of occasions, with Roeder it is rather a case of "si tacuisses". A lot of his statements are just totally unnecessary and make him look stupid if they turn out to be nonsense. He does himself no favour in talking too often to the "voice (and ear) of the fans" which Anal O. He probably should listen to some of his rather wise players... gram 0
When Bobby came here he had a very similar situation. Not much money about and had to be selective. He bought/loaned older players to get by until the younger players he wanted came about. Roeder shouldnt be so bloody stubborn. He is digging a hole for himself. It is pointless closing the door on potential solutions. The money in the game now is so great that unless we 'plan' for fiscal and sporting success (relative) then we will be in bother. That means considering all opportunities. The debt issue is becoming a major factor here. Our club is in a financial mire, and it is of our own making. Decisions without 'planning' and 'foresight' have cost us the ability to 'target' the 'right' people.
Fop 1
The problem is that the majority seem to have already made up their minds that they're going to nitpick every single Roeder interview, read it selectively, and then make some kind of dig at him, regardless of what he says- even the things written by Oliver now get attributed to Roeder. He can't win. Maybe they made up their mind because of all the nonsense Roeder already said in the past? but the problem is that they're not willing to give him any credit for the stuff he says that turned out correct. I, personally, fully back his stance not to buy shit players. To me this is idle talk tbh. No manager would say that he wants to buy "shit players" anyway. It's always what you are able to get out the players that counts. And even though Martins has started to do well, it is still early days before you really can call him a "good buy". I'll give Roeder the deserved credit when he actually signs players and they all turn out to be good, but not just by his intentions... Martins was IMO the best (and only) buy we were probably going to get, we just don't have the scouting and contact networks that most of the clubs that get unknown future superstars tend to have (and the whole British academy system seems to be pretty poor at bringing on British players), and currently we don't have the big name manager, promise of trophies or even really the cash to lure them anymore. Le Sib was also a good "buy" for the situation we were in (although why we didn't go for Cambell on a years contract I'll never know). People have got to realise this isn't 1996 anymore, or even 2004. What we need and what we can get may very well be a LONG way apart these days.
