Alliance & Leicester’s Premier Direct* pays new customers a huge 6.1% on everything in credit up to £2,500 (above that it’s 0.1%). This rate is guaranteed for roughly a year, when it reverts to Bank of England base rate minus 1% (currently 5%). While this is an internet account, some basic till services are still available in branches. In order to get these rates, simply pay your salary in there, providing you earn £6,500 per annum. Better still with A&L’s bonus system, ‘Refer a Friend’ and you’ll get £25 per person opening the account and they get £25 each too.
