Scottish Mag 3
Premiership sides Manchester City and Newcastle United may be looking to pinch Edson Braafheid from under the noses of Twente Enschede. Reports in Holland on Thursday suggest both clubs have tabled offers - thought to be around €400,000 (£264,000) - to the defender's current club Utrecht. The news will come as a shock to Twente, who announced last week that the former Holland Under 21 international would join on a free transfer in the summer. The 23-year-old had verbally agreed to a three-year deal with Twente, but reports now suggest the left-back may be looking for pastures new. Braafheid failed to show up for a Twente medical on Wednesday, leaving their deal with the player in some doubt. It remains to be seen if interest from England has prompted Braafheid to re-consider his decision to move to Twente come the end of the Eredivisie season. Scottish Mag 3
The father and agent for Utrecht left-back Edson Braafheid has angrily hit out at suggestions that his son wants to move to England. The 23-year-old, who agreed to a summer move to Eredivisie rivals Twente Enschede last week, became the subject of reported interest from Premiership sides Manchester City and Newcastle United. Reports in Holland suggested the defender had not shown up for a Twente medical on Wednesday and that both City and Newcastle had made offers to Utrecht for the player. However, the left-back's father and agent Rene Braafheid refuted those suggestions, claiming his son is committed to joining Twente on 1st July. "I don't know how the stories about foreign interest come on at this moment, as it's all old news," Braafheid told Dutch sport magazine Sportweek. "Edson could have moved to England or France. He could earn a lot of more money, but last week, he decided he would prefer a move to FC Twente and therefore, we made a verbal agreement over a three-year deal starting on July 1. "In that situation, nothing has been changed. "Twente knows it's okay, team Braafheid knows that as well. "Only the signatures haven't been set yet, we don't have to hurry. The contract will just start on July 1. "Only if FC Utrecht want to earn some money for Braafheid that it could change. "The club would have to find an agreement before the end of month with FC Twente because it's there that Edson wants to go and nothing else. "He is a man of his word."
