Would it still be haiku when it was translated though? Depends whether or not it's translated into haiku! It's a fair point, though. But I feel the spirit of the originals still comes through. The same applies to much Chinese poetry. Haiku fits the nature and spirit, symbolism, etc. of far eastern poetry better than western, though, I feel. So even translated, the brevity works fine.
