pertoon 0
So Nexus is to ask the government for 600 Million to upgrade the Metro. Well call me sceptical but i reckon they have got as much chance of getting it as we have of doing the league and cup double. Not only is Newcastle about 250 miles North of Watford where civilisation as far the government is concerned ends they are also pouring every spare penny into the Olympics. Thats when its not neeeded to bomb Iraq or Afghanistan of course. They have pulled the plug on Light rail schemes for Liverpool Leeds and the road rail project for Portsmouth /South coast and the isle of Wight. In Liverpool`s case it was the day they were due to start construction. Mind you the scousers would have ripped it up faster than they could have built it. More significantly they are draining the Midland Metro where i live to the point where it may have to CLOSE after 8 years of operating. So best of luck but dont hold your breath. Guest alex
Metro might raise some money if they made people buy tickets tbh. You can get through the barriers to get into stations and off at the other end without using a ticket and there are rarely inspectors there to check them (even at busy City Centre stations). And the fine is only £20.
Meenzer 15870
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing recently, largely because I'm at a non-gate Tube station dahn 'ere. They used to have gates that you had to feed your tickets into on the Metro many years ago, didn't they? At least at the city centre stations and maybe Regent Centre and the like. Anyone know why they were changed? I suppose the whole ticket gate thing is less enforceable at street-level, "tram"-style stops, but even the underground stations would be a start since that's where a lot of people would be going from/coming to. Gemmill 47105
Ahh the good old days of jumping the barriers. I got fined once - I had a ticket but hadn't stamped it cos the queue at the barriers was gonna make me miss the metro.

The barriers were less than 3 foot tall and completely ineffectual. Plus they kept on breaking down so you couldn't validate your ticket (all stations had them). Don't know if it's an urban myth, but iirc at least two people were supposed to have had their necks broken when they bent down at a barrier to pick up a dropped ticket. What's the metro like nowadays btw for regular users? Has it improved?

Btw, when I'm home, compared to the train I get to and from work here, I've noticed how run-down the Metro is. Handy for getting to/from Town though. I know a load of people that used too bump it and pay up when fined, but have started paying for each trip because it's not economically viable with the frequency of fines anymore. Must have changed then but I still use it about twice a week and literally never show my pass. I used to use it much more frequently - 10 times a week and still never showed my pass (less than once a month easily). When I use it now, I'm going from the airport to Benton at a busy time (or going into town on a weekend) and when I used to use it every week day (up until about 4 months ago) I was going from Benton to Town/Gateshead and back. Find it difficult to believe it's changed that much on those routes as that certainly isn't my experience when I still use it. In the four months since I've only used it once or twice a week I've never had to show my pass once. Edited January 24, 2007 by alex
Renton 22415
It pisses me off though how the inspectors blatently target commuters and turn a blind eye to charvers. To anyone driving from Newcastle to the Coast, there are major road works on Jesmond Road at the moment. The result is carnage, as would be expected. Need to find a new route home for the next 8 weeks.

TBF they aren't trained specialists and don't need the bother of facing off with some heed the ball who's off his mash on Lambrini and uses the metro once a week to get to the new monkey. It's not right, but perfectly understandable. The metro should be better policed but I think the inspectors are fine both in terms of numbers and when they're about. Why should passengers put up with these shitheads whilst the inspectors congregate in huge groups to hit 99% fare paying passengers in rush hour? The system's a joke, and worse than any other one I have been to in the world, with the possible exception of New York.

The vast majority of Nexus income is from the weekday rush hour pass buyers though. Hammering them keeps the service going. It's not cost effective to have 15 inspectors getting paid to catch one arsehole at 11pm. If people are causing trouble on the metro, that's up to the police to sort out at the moment. It's not right like, I think the council should tell Nexus that after 8pm the metro's should have 'bouncers' because you get just as many pissed up tits on there as in any pub.
