Guest alex
Got Dead Line by Stella Rimington out of the library. I'm not sexist or owt but I'll see how I find her books where the main character is a woman. Seems to be a standard spy thriller. Should be a porn star with a name like that. Not a huge fantasy fan but I know a couple of people who take this series a bit too seriously and my nasty side finds it funny that after all the years of waiting the bloke has died before finishing it. First one I've read by her. The main character seems to be an MI5 agent called Liz Carlyle, don't know which football team she supports.

Spooky they are both about Clough, but he was different. I quite liked the one by Alex Ferguson too, and the Kevin Keegan one [obviously]. I got the Bobby Robson one for Xmas but haven't started it yet. Edited February 4, 2011 by LeazesMag

Guest alex
Just read 'London Fields' by Martin Amis. Fuck knows why I bothered finishing it, I absolutely hated the steaming pile of 'postmodern' shit. There's clever, then there's just pretentious self-indulgence. Anyway, I've started 'The Iron Heel' by Jack London.
LeazesMag 0
I'd like some new authors, can't seem to find anymore. I mainly like Political thrillers ie Stephen Leather, Frederick Forsyth, Jack Higgins etc that sort of thing, but fancy a change. Don't like science fiction, I used to like the old Stephen King books ie The Stand and Harold Robbins but Robbins especially is old hat now, his first ones were superb. Raymond Chandler, maybe I'm thinking of someone else, like Mickey Spillane ? I'll have a look in the library etc. I thought Funeral In Berlin was a bit monotonous, he reminds me of someone like Gerald Seymour, OK but can get boring. If you haven't tried Stephen Leather by the way, you should. He's very good. Don't start off with the Dan Shepherd books though, get The Chinaman, Solitary Man or The Bombmaker first. Same sort of thing but Chandler's stuff is a cut above. I like that sort of thing though if it's well written. Also like those sort of films as well 'The Big Sleep', 'Double Indemnity' (he did the screenplay) etc. I think he's brilliant tbh.

Anyway, I've started 'The Iron Heel' by Jack London. Interesting. I've only read Amis' articles for the Guardian/Observer, some book reviews and the like, they were decent. As someone who can't write particularly well, I was impressed by his command of the English language and his ability to construct sentences. I've heard a lot of hate towards him and his books; I do find it funny how he can outrage the entire Guardian readership with a throwaway comment. Have you read any Amis that you could recommend? I've read 'Money' which was a lot better, but still not really my cup of char. That's all I've read. He can certainly write well but 'London Fields' just bored me to tears with its ridiculously one-dimensional characters and not a lot actually happens in the 450+ pages. It's tedious and I only finished it out of blody-mindedness. I've just remembered, he's Hitchen's pal, isn't he?
