Crikey Alex, that must be as dated as the old Dennis Wheatley horror books I read when I was about 16 Aye, but it's a different for him, it's a Dystopian novel but it pre-dates (obviously, seeing as he was dead before then) '1984', 'Brave New World' etc. That said, I think 'White Fang' and 'The Call of the Wild' are great books. Raymond Chandler, maybe I'm thinking of someone else, like Mickey Spillane ? I'll have a look in the library etc. I thought Funeral In Berlin was a bit monotonous, he reminds me of someone like Gerald Seymour, OK but can get boring. If you haven't tried Stephen Leather by the way, you should. He's very good. Don't start off with the Dan Shepherd books though, get The Chinaman, Solitary Man or The Bombmaker first. As someone who can't write particularly well, I was impressed by his command of the English language and his ability to construct sentences. I've read 'Money' which was a lot better, but still not really my cup of char. That's all I've read. He can certainly write well but 'London Fields' just bored me to tears with its ridiculously one-dimensional characters and not a lot actually happens in the 450+ pages.
