Just reading 'Southern Nights' by Barry Gifford. Canny good so far (it's a collection of 3 short novels). Barry Gifford is the bloke who wrote The Sailor and Lulu books (including 'Wild at Heart') and co-wrote the screenplay for 'Lost Highway' with David Lynch. Also re-read 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' recently which is still fucking brilliant.

Virtually everything the (now defunct) Rebel Inc. ever published is worth checking out.

Just been travelling around southern Spain for a few days accompanied by 'Ham On Rye', by Charles Bukowski. Excellent. 10/10.

Probably his best novel, which is saying something. You should read John Fante (especially the Bandini Quartet) and the novels of his son, Dan. The former inspired Bukowski and the latter is very much in his style (but a bit updated).

Cheers for that chap. I'd noticed at the back of 'Ham On Rye', a selction of John Dante works as recommended reading. 'Wait Until The Spring, Banding', Ask The Dust' and 'Brotherhood Of The Grape'. The fact that Bukowski has said that Dante 'was his God' is good enough for me.

Brotherhood of the Grape's alright but not in the class of the Bandini novels. In chronological order they're 'Wait Until The Spring Bandini', 'The Road to Los Angeles', 'Ask The Dust' and 'Dreams from Bunker Hill'; although 'The Road...' was written first and has some inconsistencies. It's difficult to say which is the best although 'Ask the Dust' gets most plaudits. They're all class though and I probably like 'Dreams from Bunker Hill' (dictated from his death bed) the best. You can get them all in a single volume published by Canongate anyway.

The Road to Wigan pier - George Orwell.

A great read so far and in the early chapters it really goes into great detail about the life of a miner and class differences before and after the great war. Definitely worth a read although towards the end he goes off on a massive socialist rant.

Decided to wing it and read it all last night. Best book I've read, simply brilliant, addictive, gritty and unforgettable. Will be picking up the sequel 'Porno' and the prequel 'SkagBoys', when its realesed later this year.

Going to get the sequel to Trainspotting tomorrow; Porno. Anybody else reccomend similair books to Trainspotting?

I thought Glue was better than Porno (although the latter is good too). It has a few of the characters from Trainspotting that crop up in it as well. It might just be the best book of his I've read.

It's the first book I've read from Welsh, and will be picking up both Porno and Glue. Wouldn't mind checking his short story catalouge, and especially E.

What are your opinions on T.spotting?

'Trainspotting' is great imo. As for 'Ecstasy: 3 Chemical Romances', it was alright, but not his best work (still good stuff though). I thought 'The Acid House' was better (short stories collection). 'Marabou Stork Nightmares' by him (3rd book / 2nd novel iirc) is quality too and one that a lot of people seem to have missed. I've also read 'Filth' which was canny good although not my favourite.

Fear & Loathing.

I started reading this with a vicious hangover and the fear in general.

"A Drug Person Can Learn To Handle Such Things As Seeing Their Dead Grandmother Crawling Up Their Leg With A Knife In Her Teeth. But No One Should Be Asked To Deal With This Trip. "
