Gemmill 46199
I read Faster, really good read. Like you say, the bloke is pretty funny which is just as well as it could have been quite a dry book!
Tooj 17
Started reading The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time yesterday. Absolutely flying through it and think I will probably finish it tonight. I am 70% done so far. Just at the bit where Christopher is talking to the policeman at Swindon train station. I absolutely adore this book and Christopher. Apparently the play is on at the Theatre Royal next year, so think I shall definitely be going to see that. Ayatollah Hermione 14094
Just started A Spy Among Friends by Ben Macintyre. All about a British Soviet double agent during the Cold War who was best friends with the top brass in MI6 and the CIA, who had absolutely no idea he was doling out info to the Russians. Fascinating as it goes into how he managed to pull it off and the scope of just what he was giving away is amazing. Well recommended if you're interested in The Cold War and it was only a fiver or something for the Kindle version.

Haddon's follow-up to that - A Spot of Bother is good too. Very different to the first one but worth a read nonetheless. You'll fly through that one too. scoobos 298
Collapse, how societies choose to fail or succeed. Sounds boring but its really good. Another vote for Marabou Stork Nightmares though, I think its in my top 5 books of all time, just for its execution. I didn't know what parts of it the narrative would pivot on at the time so it got a lot of undeserved attention.
Alex 35666
Agreed. I didn't know what parts of it the narrative would pivot on at the time so it got a lot of undeserved attention. It could be condensed into about two pages. Easily. He's basically saying I'm not actually a wolf from the Steppes but spiritually I am a wolf from the Steppes. Over and over and over again Love that book though.

Toonpack 10050
24 Hours at Waterloo by Robert Kershaw. (currently at 7:30pm) Just as well Napoleon didn't win, we'd have ended up with something like a federalised Europe with a common marketplace, single currency and central law making authorities and the like, we got away with one there............... Highly recommend Kershaw's War Without Garlands as well.

Dr Gloom 22198
i just read american psycho for the first time. i found the first half of the novel to be gripping, though i ended up skim-reading some of the more brutal torture scenes in the second half of the book. it all just became a bit excessive. i knew it was coming but i think the book woudl have been better if the more disturbing chapters were more spaced out, particularly as the more compelling bits were those that explored the darkest elements of bateman's psyche. the gory stuff became a bit boring towards the end of the book, almost pornographic. just started the sex lives of the siamese twins by irvine welsh. a departure from his leith comfort zone with a female personal trainer as the protagonist, who i'm starting to realise might also be a bit of a psycho.
