Guest alex
The novels are even better than the short stories, Gem. So if you like that, give them a go.

The Fish 10972
alex, aren't you on planes a fair bit still? I'd recommend a kindle mate. You can still have the real books at home, just take the kindle for when you're mobile.

I used to hate travelling when I was a big deal. All my "trade" mates used to think I was lucky as hell but wouldnt believe I was jealous of them staying put. (My only opportunity to contribute to this thread so I thought I'd take it).

Guest alex
Just read 'Bitter Lemons of Cyprus' by Lawrence Durrell and re-read John Fante's four 'Bandini' novels. Going to read 'Forced Entries' by Jim Carroll (RIP) next.

wykikitoon 20888
Broken Skin - Stuart MacBride. Hes a canny crime fiction writer. Set in Scotland, he is a new Rankin type writer. Gritter characters and good story lines. Also read his Cold Granite & Dying Light
Brock Manson 0
Before I Go To Sleep by SJ Watson. Great book. I met him at Waterstones in Nottingham - he was having a discussion with Tess Gerritsen about crime fiction and writing, really great stuff. Thoroughly nice bloke to top it off, looks uncannily like Meenzer! Even wished me good luck when I was talking to him about dealing with writer's block. Gemmill 46141
He's a nelly nuffter as well! I'm enjoying the book - about 2/3 of the way through at the minute. It's good cos when you read the premise, it sounds great, but it easily have been a trashy disappointment. But he's obviously a proper (Souness style) writer, so it's really well put together. Guest alex
Really enjoyed Bukowski's ''Post Office''. Not really sure what Bukowski to go for next so any advice would be appreciated There are 5 'Chinaski' novels. The others are Factotum (when he's doing a load of odd jobs / bumming around / 'trying to make it' as he would say), Women (when he achieved success as a writer and got his end away), Ham on Rye (about his childhood / school days / early adulthood) and finally Hollywood (about the writing of the screenplay for his life story Barfly starring Micky Rourke). My personal favourite is Ham... but tbh they're all great, although Hollywood is defintitely the weakest of the lot. He also wrote Pulp which is his sort of bizarre take on the noir detective genre. It's a good laugh but a bit all over the shop. His short story collections are good too especially Tales of Ordinary Madness and The Most Beautiful Woman in Town. The vast majority of his output was in the form of poetry though. I'm not a big fan of poetry in general but his stuff is worth a look. It's pretty funny / depressing / true to life, just like his other stuff. I've just re-read Hunger by Knut Hamsun which was a major influence on him as it happens.
