Materialism: The "What have you bought?" Thread

Need to sort out cheap transport down to London, whaddya reckon'll be best bet? buying a train ticket now (about a month in advance) or leaving it until closer to the date?

oh and the last things I bought were the Guardian, the Independent and the Times (Can't just steal them from the local coffee shop anymore  )

Use thetrainline.com. If you can select the exact trains and times you want you can get separate outward and return tickets for much cheaper than you'd pay for a return on the day or closer the time.

Use thetrainline.com to find out the train times and provider. Then go to the provider's site and buy them cheaper. thetrainline add a % on top. Saved about £15 on my last trip down south by getting my tickets direct from Virgin.

Edit: BTW, buy them early. Not only do you get a better chance of a decent seat (with plug if you are using a laptop) but the tickets are cheaper.

I've used trainline before and they lost my registration, which meant I lost the £20 and had to buy the ticket on the day which cost me a fucking fortune, so it's likely I'd just check trainline for services and pootle to the station itself.

was mainly asking if anyone knew of a sneaky website which does even better deals and whatnot

You don't really get that with trains, no. And booking early is definitely the way to go, either way.

EDIT: Although many operators - NXEC (ex-GNER), for example - only release their cheap tickets 3 months beforehand, say, so there are limits on "early" too.

Actually, the whole thing sucks baals.

Cheers m'dears. Quite excited about the whole thing.

Getting onto Gumtree and the like for a house-share around Clapham/Streatham area, have the outside chance of a one bedroom flat in Primrose Hill for under £100 a week which is amazing but like I say it's an outside chance.

All this because of listening to one song at the wrong/right time.

Phew, we won't quite be neighbours.

Good luck with it all though. If you need someone to guide you round the wacky world of soft furnishings at IKEA Croydon...

I was laughing at the snobbery man Dave re: the IKEA comment. Fwiw I don't believe you've ever bought a rocking chair, let alone got a stiffy over it. As I know you say owt but your prayers  I should have bolded the first sentence.

I left that place fucking ages ago man, couldn't bear living with a bloke who's idea of haute cuisine was adding piccalili to everything. (also the girls who he met on internet dating sites were bigger, hairier and scarier than GM)

moved in with some mates for the short term.
