Just tried out a few things from my latest acquisition, Madhur Jaffrey's "Curry Easy". Grilled masala salmon was lovely if surprisingly mustardy, basmati rice with lentils went claggy because my hob apparently doesn't do "very low" enough, okra with shallots and cumin turned out very nice. Not a bad first outing - shouldn't gather too much dust on the shelf.

mines the same.

Thats a canny bit of effort you put in there mind.

See this below : I got it from one of the Indian shops in Brighton Grove/Wingrove Road, its a basic quick instant curry mix, on the back it suggests adding a bit of tomato, mustard seeds, asafoetida. I also put in some dried fenugreek leaves and a bit of chilli [not too much because I didn't feel like a hot curry], stirred in some cooked chicken, and it was really nice. Quick and easy.

Wife got a slow cooker the other day. Chucked in two Asda Lamb shanks coated in a Marksy marinate Thingy and came out dropping off the bone as they do in restaurants.

On special £20 morphy Richards 6.5 litre v8

did she cover it with anything in that, or just the marinade ?

Aye, water half way up the side of the shanks. Made lovely gravy.

Wasn't too bad really, most of the work's done in advance and these things always get quicker the more often you try them. Might have a go at doing basmati rice on a low heat in the oven (after a quick sautee) and see if that works better.

All suggestions welcome and it will keep me off twitter.

Googled this one from Times Online. Will advise if its nice. (Wheres Fist and TS when you need them)!!!

Serves 4

Prep 25 min plus 15 min cooling

Cook 30 min

Ingredients

2 onions

2 tbsp vegetable oil

knob of butter

½ tsp dried thyme

1 tsp fresh 500g minced beef

½ tbsp flour

½ chicken stock cube

350ml boiling water

300g puff pastry

flour for dusting

1 egg

Method

Heat oven to 400F/gas mark 6. Peel and finely chop onions. Heat oil and butter, stir in onions with ½ tsp salt, plenty of black pepper and thyme. Cook, stirring frequently, until starting to soften and colour. Crumble beef over, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up clumps. Allow to brown, then drain off excess oil. Sift flour over meat, stirring well until it disappears. Add stock cube dissolved in 350ml boiling water. Stir as mince comes slowly to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes until thick. Cool. Dust a work surface with flour and roll out half the pastry to fit a 23cm pie dish, leaving a 5cm overhang. Fill with cooled mince. Roll out lid. Paint over hang with water, fit lid and crimp to seal, trimming excess. Fork a few air holes. Paint lid with beaten egg. Bake for 30 minutes or until crisp.

I'll paint your lid with a beaten egg. What happened to the diet, chunkynuts?

Lifestyle change  I told ya, done and dusted. No need to turn up and get weighed once you've cracked it.

And the gym reports seem to have died down....... :D

Havent tasted as yet so will advise on that later. Worth noting though that I wasnt that impressed with the taste of the filling pre - pie so lobbed a sludge of worcester sauce and tomato sauce which seemed to improve it.

As I typed our lass has just brought me a junk into the garden. Pastry (home made) is delicious. Filling is a bit too over powered with the tyhme. Would also prefer a thicker sauce however I know the big bakeries use heart to thicken it up and Im not keen on that. (NB Dont know if they still use heart before anyone voimits).
