Newcastle are set to try to land Arsenal starlet Jeremie Aliadiere on loan to boost their striking options.

United boss Glenn Roeder is keen on the 23-year-old Frenchman, and was at Anfield in midweek to see him rip Liverpool apart in the Carling Cup.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger does not want to sell Aliadiere, but appreciates his desire to be a regular Premiership starter, and so will consider loaning him out.

But Roeder looks to have been priced out of a move for West Brom centre-back Curtis Davies.

The Baggies last week quoted Tottenham a staggering £12 MILLION for their prize asset, who is also interesting Aston Villa.

So Roeder is also set to try the loan market for defenders, with Arsenal centre-half Johan Djourou and 17-year-old left-back Armand Traore having also caught the eye against Liverpool.

Aliadiere has never matured into a Premiership player at 23 years of age, and should be a definite no-no in my opinion. Djourou is a good defender, but aren't Arsenal a bit short on central defenders? Dont think Wenger would let him go. Traore looks like he is at least as good as we've got, and more chance of us getting him as well.

Wouldn't mind Gallas or Henry either.

Bollocks, he was there to watch Kuyt.

Dont think I agree with the bit in bold. IMO, signing Aliadiere on a loan deal would be a very clever move considering our situation right now.

a.) He wouldn't cost much. Don't think his wages are in the Ronaldo/Viduka-league.

b.) He's eager to prove his ability to play PL-football.

c.) We've got limited funds - hence the talk about loan deals.

d.) It would allow us to focus our spending on our major weakness - the defence, especially LB.

e.) We don't know if Owen will ever be the same as before the injury.

I'm all for it. Get the lad Aliadiere in.

If we are to get a centre back I would rather not loan a youngster to give him experience, we have enough of those here already. A left back I would certainly take though. Not sure on Aliadiere either, as said he has looked pretty bad at previous clubs he has been at!

Well, my point is, that it is a "no risk"-signing because he wont cost much. I don't really care if he was shit at West Ham, Wolves and Celtic. He did rape Liverpool at Anfield in midweek... I think the fact that Arsene won't sell, tells a lot about how highly rated Aliadiare is.

Would he play any more than Rossi did here?

23 years old and still very much a fringe player kind of tells me he isn't anything that special. I know he has had a lot of quality in front of him but he hasn't done it at a lot of clubs! I would be suprised if Arsenal wouldn't let him go permanently with Henry, RVP, Walcott, Baptista, Adebayor all likely to be ahead of him, i know some of them can play in midfield but with the midfielders they already have I doubt he will ever see much game time.

Yeah but strikers don't mature till they're 27-28.

Hmm, difficult to tell...

I think the main reasons Rossi didn't get that many games here was:

a.) He was cup-tied in the UEFA-cup.

b.) Had to leave for about 14 days because of problems in the family IIRC.

c.) Coudn't play against Manure.

Don't think Fergie had a valid point when he criticised Roeder over Rossi's lack of games.

Well even Baptista is having a hard time getting into the starting XI. Martins would only be third or fourth choise in the Arsenal-attack. But as I said before, I would only take Aliadiare on a loan-deal, because I think that we need to focus our spending on the defence.

What exactly are people basing their opinions on him on?

Is it 6 1/2 years of doing nothing or one game against a terrible Liverpool side? Even Ameobi is a far more accomplished player.

Exactly, before that game I doubt anyone would even consider taking him. Because of that game and the chronicle claiming Wenger wouldn't sell he is now a superstar ;)
