Scottish Mag 3 Posted January 12, 2007 Share Posted January 12, 2007 St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson hopes to persuade Newcastle Utd striker Carl Finnigan that he can become the next Anthony Stokes by moving to Paisley. The 18-year-old Stokes won a £2m move to Sunderland after a successful loan spell with Falkirk from Arsenal. And MacPherson said: "We mentioned Stokes to Carl, saying a kid came up from Arsenal and did terrifically well. "That's not to say that Carl will do the same for us but it just shows you what can happen." The 20-year-old Finnigan has yet to break into the first-team at St James' Park. "These youngsters just want to play football and, when they are at the top Premiership clubs, it is difficult for them to get an opportunity," said MacPherson. "But they will get an opportunity here. "The boy wants to come and we want the boy so it's now the final piece of the jigsaw that we are waiting on. "We are waiting on word from Newcastle." The 20-year-old has signed an 18-month contract with head coach John Hughes' Scottish Premier League outfit, BBC Sport understands. Finnigan had hoped to have a loan spell at another club before the end of his contract in the summer. But Newcastle preferred that he leave immediately as they did not intend to offer him a new deal. It is also believed that the English Premiership club were demanding a sell-on clause should he move during January. St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson had made public his desire to sign Finnigan and hoped that the forward would match the success of Anthony Stokes in Scotland. The 18-year-old Stokes won himself a £2m move from Arsenal to Sunderland after becoming top scorer in the Scottish Premier League while on loan with Falkirk. Finnigan has not broken into the Newcastle first-team but scored 59 goals in 102 appearances for the Premiership outfit's reserve side. He impressed on trial at St Mirren Park along with Newcastle team-mate Chris Shanks, who was subsequently interesting St Johnstone.
