The fact that the board are paid to make decisions are irrelevant, just because they had the money to buy into the football club doesn't mean they are better judges than some fans, because they are not, and that goes for all directors of every club everywhere.

Which is why most forward thinking clubs now appoint a Director of football, someone who has been involved in football and has a better all round knowledge of the playing side of the game.

Something we should have done years ago.

I'm not denying that may help, but please tell us how many of these "most forward thinking" clubs have qualified for europe more than us in the last decade ?

But - do you think a DOF would NOT have chosen Dalglish, Gullit and Robson ?

But we've qualified for Europe more because of our financial clout, we've thrown money we can't afford at the problem because it's the only way our board know how, yet a club like Spurs who have a DOF have built themselves up the right way, they now have a far better squad than us and are virtually debt free.

As for would a DOF have chosen Dalglish, Gullit and Robson?

They probably would have although I'm not sure what you're trying to prove by that, I don't think you can blame a board for appointing managers of the calibre of Dalglish and it going wrong, however when you appoint absolute shite like Souness and Roeder then fingers are going to be pointed in your direction.

Do you think a DOF would have chosen Souness or Roeder?

you don't necessarily build from the back or the front, you build by improving when you can, wherever you can, even then it takes a lot of caution. ie is it worth buying a player who is a bit better than carr now or using that money and a bit more to get one a lot better in the summer.

I'm only pointing out that the board made at least 3 of their last 5 appointments whereby a DOF would have made no difference to the choice. As you say, it is difficult if not impossible to blame a board for appointing a manager with the track record of Dalglish, nobody was to know he was going to change the whole team around like he did. Maybe he should have had more time, with hindsight, he just might have known what he was doing ?

The only thing you can say about using financial clout is, they are generating it and if you didn't show the ambition to generate it you would pretty quickly and justifiably have something to really complain about. I do agree that throwing money at things isn't always the best solution, but do you think Spurs would have been where they are now if Santini hadn't left ? I don't. The key is the manager, it always is.

It is difficult to say if a DOF would have chosen Souness or Roeder. Souness has friends in the game, and contacts, cue the amount of idiots saying in the media [football people such as Hansen and Lawrenson] that said he was "getting it right" and other such bollocks, so its possible, but I wouldn't. I can see a case for Roeder though, personally, he wouldn't have been my number 1 choice but I will go with the club for appointing someone with coaching ability and who puts the club first and give him a chance. I wouldn't like to have seen another "big name" more interested in his big name than the club again.

If Roeder helps rebuild some stability and spirit in the club then he will have done a decent job for the next guy to move forward further, hopefully.

I don't actually mind the empty seats in the ground either. It will clear out some of the plastic fans and make room for the younger proper fans of the next generation when we come back again .....

I agree with what you're saying however I'd expect a DOF to do more for his wages than to select a manager every few years, to start with he could have set up a youth system to match Arsenal and Man Utd, scouting and poaching the best young players around to save us money in the future.

But they haven't generated it though mate, they've borrowed it to cover up their fuck ups which is the reason we're nearly £90 million in debt, as for Santini? who knows? however none of their signings were made by him or Jol but by Arnesen and Comolli, players like Lennon for £1 million is astounding business.

You could point to us signing N'Zogbia for less but that only came about because he was brought to us by his agent, we never went out and scouted him, same with Bernard.

Well I wouldn't have picked Roeder, he seems a nice bloke and a good coach however he's shown nothing to suggest he can handle the pressure of such a role, he also doesn't have the balls to make tough decisions regarding leaving big name players out for the sake of the team.

If he does do a good job for the next manager then I can't have any complains, however it all stems back to making an awful appointment in Souness which needs us to rebuild again.

1. Partly agree, Bobby Robson attempted to do this, he scouted and bought players with potential ie Bramble, Jeanarse, Viana, Ambrose to name 4.....he set up one of the best youth systems in the country at Ipswich so certainly was aware that it can reap dividends. It's still cut throat stuff though, because all the other clubs are also looking for the best youngsters. Don't you think this is major reason we have built our new academy ?

2. The debt is what they call "manageable" in football isn't it ? Its tied up in the ground and although I know under Souness we overspent on players through his stupidity, it is the reason now why we are having to balance the books. I know he was a twat, I will never defend the appointment of Souness.

3. I'm not really happy with the idea of other people buying players other than managers, Arneson is just a one off, if I was Jol I wouldn't be too happy either. If its your head on the block you should want to choose your own players ?

4. If Roeder lacks the balls to drop parker or choose between him and Butt, then he isn't the first and won't be the last manager to play his captain because he is his captain. The answer is of course not to make Parker captain in the first place, but who would be captain ?? This team is short of leadership, in fact it is badly short. I would play Butt.

Eriksson and now McLaren have done the same thing ref Lampard and Gerrard. He should choose Gerrard and kick Lampard into touch. IMO he should also bring Beckham back to play on the right. He wanted to stamp his authority by binning Beckham but he would have done that if he'd chosen between the other 2 players. Mourhino is also having the same thing with Ballack and Lampard ? They won't go together either.

Yay, the old Lampard v Gerrard debate ;)

The difference being, Lampard is the form player out of the two. Who out of Butt, Parker and Emre is actually on form at the moment?

Indeed it is..........and ref Jon saying that a chairman should have more football knowledge than a fan [when he only has more money and that is why he is where he is] there is no excuse for a football MANAGER to not have the same nous as a fan.

You don't put square pegs into round holes [ie playing a player on the left of midfield if he doesn't play there for his club], and you can't fit 2 pegs into one hole, they should have the courage of their convictions.

EDIT. Ref your question, I would play Gerrard regardless, in fact I would make him captain instead of Terry.

Ditto Butt and Emre, Emre has been playing better alongside Butt, he is getting forward more, filling the hole between midfield and attack, this has been a big factor in our better results since they were paired up.

Sorry where did I say chairmen should have more knowledge than fans or are you making things up again?

;)

I may be wrong but it seems to me you are suggesting it doesnt really matter if the chairman has little knowledge of football because they have the money to be where they are. Quite worrying!
