I was a bit confused when I switched over after seeing the breaking news thing on SSN, didn't know it was delayed coverage.

Checked LiveScore and he was sent off in the last minute, was about 3 other bookings in the 90th minute aswell so must have been fisticuffs.

never a straight red... there were 11 yellows in that game plus, Beckham's red. Ridiculous.

The huge amount of bookings in Spanish football is ridiculous.

That's what I was getting at :D it's totally ludicrous. Unless there's a mass brawl I can't see how you can justify over 10 bookings.

Which is also why I never understand why the refs get as much grief as they do in England. They are little hitlers in Spain, and everytime I watch a French league match, I want to kill myself. At least in the Premierleague they use some common sense.

SHOULD I PICK BECKS?

Mac's amazing phone poll of England stars

Exclusive by Paul Smith

STEVE McCLAREN has asked his England stars for their opinions on whether he should hand David Beckham a shock recall.

The England coach is considering an astonishing selection U-turn by including 31-year-old Beckham in his squad for next month's crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel.

A source close to one senior England player confirmed: "The subject of recalling Beckham has been raised.

"Obviously McClaren has concerns about destabilising fragile team morale at a critical time but it's clear he's thinking about bringing Becks back."

Beckham, who has 94 caps, resigned the England captaincy after the World Cup finals last summer and has been left out of McClaren's squad since.

There have been claims that some England players resented the power he wielded during Sven Goran Eriksson's reign.

However, there has been some positive feedback to McClaren's enquiries in recent days. And support for Beckham has come from a surprising quarter.

Fabio Capello, the Real Madrid coach who vowed never to select Beckham a few weeks ago, has now restored the player to club football and wants him to break back into the international scene.

Capello said: "I hope for Beckham's sake that he does return for England as it will make him happy. He's always behaved like a great professional. Of course it all depends on the coach but he could do good things for England." McClaren will monitor Beckham's form in the coming weeks.

The former England skipper was sent off for the fifth time in his Real career last night when he was dismissed in injury time during the 0-0 home draw with Real Betis.

Beckham was shown a straight red card after he scythed down Betis defender Isidro in frustration at his side's failure to grab all three points.

Until that moment - the eighth red card of his career - Beckham had impressed and gone close to breaking the deadlock.

With Beckham committed to join LA Galaxy next season, any England recall would appear to be a short-term strategy.

McClaren has refused to close the door on Beckham unless he formally retires from international football. Becks has always claimed winning 100 England caps remains a personal ambition.

And a Beckham recall would undoubtedly help the beleaguered boss solve one huge problem. England's poor form has placed the coach under increasing critical scrutiny.

What better diversion than inviting the Beckham bandwagon to take the public's attention off the boss and on to the recalled superstar?

I don't know why Beckham still draws all this attention, hasn't been anywhere near his best for 2/3 years now. Just shows the paucity of exported English players in the Euro game....Still lacking texhnique and brains.

Not saying he deserves it (who does tbh?) but it's pretty obvious why he still gets lots of attention in the press over here.

......yes press driven I agree. Not really anymore much to do with his declining abilities. Capello is 100% right about him and tried to remould Real, they have been too dumb IMO to let him overhaul a club which should be doing a lot better with the turnover they have.

Capello seemed a bit quick to say he'd never play for them again though  I couldn't give two fucks about Beckham though. Tabloid fodder tbh. And I can't see him transforming the game in the US. He's just gone for the money. Which is fair enough I suppose.

He won't 'transform' the game over here, but he will raise its profile, which was the aim (he already has.) I don't think even the people spouting it believe half the shite they've come out with about him. It's all media speak.

I think it'll be short term though. Going off the past.

The past being the NASL?

It's a different reality now. In the NASL days, noone played soccer, no one had heard of soccer. Half of the population couldn't even have named Pele.

Now soccer is the most played sport for youth in this country now. The game is familiar to people. The fact that there is a reason to go to a game will be enough to bring out people who otherwise wouldn't go, and it will catch on with at least some of them. The sport is more popular now than it ever was in the past, with MLS running things in a much more intelligent way than the NASL ever did. The DP rule is going to be an interesting test, but I have a feeling it'll be a rule that goes away after the 'trial period.'

Well, that and people like Lothar Matthaus going. Beckham's a 'movie star' if you like in soccer terms. I think he'll raise the profile in the short-trem but I think it's about as popular as it will ever get in the US given the competition. You'd know more about it than me though tbh.
