Glenn Roeder has urged young Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor to play to his strengths - and hide his weaknesses.

The United boss wants the 20-year-old to learn from his more experienced colleague Nobby Solano.

Roeder said today: "Nobby has the worst left foot in the world but nobody would know it because his right foot is so good.

This is the sort of thing Steven Taylor has got to learn.

"Steven is a very enthusiastic player and the fans have taken to him.

"He enjoys the fact he is a local lad playing for Newcastle United. Peter Ramage is much more reserved but as he's also a local lad he enjoys wearing the black-and-white strip as much as Steve.

"It is the dream of every young boy who grows up in Newcastle to play for the black-and-whites and they have both achieved that.

"They are young players in what I call an older, more experienced man's position, but they are doing very well.

"They still have lots to learn - they know that - but they are terrific lads to work with.

"The pair are sponges for information, they cannot get enough and are always asking questions to try to become better players.

"There is lots of improvement in them. They need to keep their heads down and keep listening and working hard, which I am sure they will."

The time and money invested in United's Academy in recent years has paid dividends this season with young defenders Paul Huntington and David Edgar, who marked his home debut with a precious equaliser against Manchester United on Monday, playing important roles and midfielder Matty Pattison also involved.

Roeder freely admits he has had to blood some of his youngsters sooner than he would have liked, but their response has provided encouragement for the club's future.

Twenty-year-old Pattison is a case in point, having rubbed shoulders with Chelsea's German international Michael Ballack in the club's 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge last month.

Roeder said: "Matty Pattison has had a little taste of first-team football and he has not let anyone down when he has been on the pitch.

"He came on against Chelsea and suddenly he was playing against Michael Ballack, a German World Cup star, and he did well."

So whilst Nobby hides his weakness well, our manager chooses to use the media to highlight it to everyone.

Well done Glenn.... :yes

Im not sure how reliable this news is as nothing is being said in their respective official websites. But should this be true,Ill be freaking angry because such things shouldnt be allowed in the premiership or any other leagues in any country. Its like taking a bribe from somebody. Its bloody ridiculous.

Oh, come off it lads. Everyone and their dog knows that Solano has an atrocious left foot. It doesn't need Roeder to say that.

So he isn't really hiding his weakness then...

Blame Oliver's choice of vocabulary, then. Roeder's quotes are simply implying that Solano has a shit left foot, so ensures that he makes best use of his right. Nothing about hiding his weaknesses. Those are Oliver's words.

I actually partly do agree with you (won't happen again :yes ), but think that Roeder just used a stupid comparison. Of course Solano can sort of "hide" his crap left foot, but that's partly down to his position on the right flank which allows him to play with his right foot as often as possible. But how can Taylor hide similar weaknesses of his game? How can a defender hide his sometimes poor positioning or his leaning to rash challenges.

I partly agree with you too :yes . But I think Roeder means more that he doesn't want Taylor thinking he's a world-beater in every area and trying to do too much in areas that aren't his strength.

He is just giving the lad some confidence...he wouldnt be in the team bar this horrific injury list.
