Owen ahead of schedule

Dec 31 2006

By Neil Farrington, The Sunday Sun

The Newcastle striker is now optimistic he will be back in action up to six weeks before the end of the season after receiving the results of the latest scan on his injured knee.

US specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who operated on Owen in September, rang the England star last week to tell him his knee was in "pristine condition".

And Steadman has given the England star the green light to step up his fitness schedule ahead of a return to first-team training in March.

The news comes as United boss Glenn Roeder insisted Owen's presence at Newcastle is a major selling point as he bids to bring new faces to St James's Park.

"At worst, Michael is on schedule. Potentially, he is ahead of schedule," revealed Roeder. "He got a scan sent over to Dr Steadman in Colorado to have a look at.

"He looked at the scan and is absolutely delighted. The knee is in pristine condition. He gave Michael the good news over the telephone.

"But the news about the scan this week just rubber stamped how Michael feels the knee is itself in terms of stability. He feels good.

"The scan has confirmed that and will have given him great belief."

Good news indeed. So he is potentially 2 months away from full training - guess we're looking at the beginning of April before he's playing..

Still concerned as to how Roeder plans to fit both him and Martins in the same side. I think we need more of a target man to complement one of them rather than playing two midgets.

Unless one of them ends up on the right wing? <_<

Who needs a target man when Martins can jump about 8 feet?

Very true - his leaping ability is quite something. The one against Everton yesterday was impressive.

Mind you, the penalty went higher..............only just! <_<

I know he's not everyone's favourite, but I'm particularly interested to see how Owen links up with Kieron Dyer.

Owen's type of play has always thrived off pacy through balls and I reckon Dyer could well be the one to provide them.

Great news <_<

But I'll have nightmares about him breaking down on his comeback should he return early.

If that happens then I will blame the fans. Well, those at the match anyway.

Too many people throwing around banana skins at SJP Ive heard

couldn't agree more, Owen makes clever, sharp runs which the likes of Emre, Solano and Dyer are all too happy to find with their particular type of passing.

this is good news, but I'm terrified that he'll break down.

or get an eye injury that'll keep him out for another 4 months

or get locked up for letting a hooker snort coke off his cock

hmmmm how many time shave we heard this then?

Dyer 2 weeks away....

Dyer the fittest Ive ever seen (said 2 months before he reappeared)

Personally, I think its another PR attempt to keep us all quiet pre-transfer window.

Hope Im wrong though

Aye but teams will be well aware of Owen's/Martin's/Dyer's pace and can lie deep to eliminate through balls in the knowledge that we don't have a physical presence up front to lump the ball up to. I still think a big man/little man combination allows us much more room to vary tactics depending on the situation.

The more in depth article in the paper made for interesting reading about Owen. They said whilst he is recovering from the knee injury they are also working on his hamstrings and doing work to strengthen this (like Dyer did) to get him back to what he was like at Liverpool when he used to destroy people with his pace. It said since those days he's never quite been able to go 100% on the accelerator when running.

If they can get him back with his knee intact and do this work with his hamstrings, it could be quite a comeback!

Now more importantly, this is a thread about Owen, why hasn't it degenerated into "he only cares about England, he couldn't give a shit about toon fans, and never mentions us in interviews etc. etc." <_<
